Michael Meier (born November 15, 1949 in Lünen ) is a German soccer professional and has a degree in business administration . As a manager and managing director he worked for the Bundesliga clubs 1. FC Köln , Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund . In these positions he was also vice-president of the G-14 group of European football clubs , a member of the board of directors and the supervisory board of the DFL , a member of the board of directors of the German Football Association and a member of the DFB league committee.

Michael Meier currently works as a management consultant and gives lectures on sports, companies and the media.

Career as a manager

Meier began his career in professional football after completing his degree in business administration and subsequent employment in a renowned auditing company as a managing board member at 1. FC Köln (1981 to 1987), with which he won the DFB Cup in 1983 . After moving to Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1987 to 1989), Meier's club won the UEFA Cup in 1988, the biggest title in the club's history as head of the football department. On December 1, 1989, Meier joined Borussia Dortmund as a managing board member. Together with Gerd Niebaum , he was the first German football club to go public in October 2000 , but was no longer employed after June 30, 2005 due to blatant management errors that almost led to the insolvency of the club. From 2005 to 2010 Meier worked again for 1. FC Köln. After slipping into the relegation-threatened table ranks, he was dismissed by FC on November 28, 2010.

Awards

In 1992 and 1993 the kicker sports magazine named Michael Meier (who worked for BVB at the time) as Manager of the Year ; an award given by the soccer magazine from 1989 to 1994.

IPO with Borussia Dortmund

Michael Meier and Gerd Niebaum led Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA as managing directors as the first and so far only German soccer club to go public. In October 2000, the company placed 13.5 million shares on the stock exchange, which brought BVB net issue proceeds of 130 million euros.
