Michael Mitterauer

Michael Mitterauer (born June 12, 1937 in Vienna ) is an Austrian economic and social historian .

Life

Michael Mitterauer first attended the Schottengymnasium in Vienna . After studying history and art history at the University of Vienna , he received his doctorate in 1960 with the greatest possible academic success ( “sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae” ). His dissertation was published under the title "Carolingian Margraves in the Southeast". After research stays, etc. a. in Munich, he completed his habilitation in 1969 in economic and social history and was appointed associate professor in 1971 and full professor in 1973 in the newly created professorial position in economic and social history at the University of Vienna. The scholar, who was also heavily involved in popular education, retired in 2003 . Mitterauer's works have been translated into several languages.

A particular concern of Mitterauer was and is the popular autobiography and the development of the documentation of biographical records within his institute that has been undertaken since the early 1980s . A series of books (“So that it is not lost”) of over 60 titles has grown out of the latter activities, which is specifically dedicated to the historical experience of rural and urban lower classes.

Memberships

He has been a member of the Catholic student association KÖStV Austria Wien in the ÖCV since 1955 and of the KÖHV Neostadia Wiener Neustadt since 1958 and ÖKaV Theresiana Wiener Neustadt since 1990.

honors and awards

Mitterauer was awarded numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. He was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for the Humanities (1996), the Wilhelm Hartel Prize (2003) and the Great Leopold Kunschak Prize (2004). In 2004 Mitterauer was awarded the Prize of the Historisches Kolleg (Deutscher Historikerpreis) for his book Why Europe? to spoken to. This is the first time that an Austrian scientist has received the Historical College Prize. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Blagoevgrad and, in 2007, from the University of Salzburg . Also in 2007 he received the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art . In 2010 he received the golden doctoral degree from the University of Vienna. In his honor, the Michael Mitterauer Prize for social, cultural and economic history, founded by the federal government, the municipality of Vienna and the Institute, was awarded to young historians for the first time in 2002.
