Michael Reed Barratt , MD (* 16th April 1959 in Vancouver , Clark County , Washington ) is an American physician and astronaut of NASA .

education

Barratt received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Washington in 1981 and a PhD in Medicine from Northwestern University in 1985 . He then specialized in internal medicine and aerospace medicine . Working with Wright State University , NASA, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base , he achieved a Master of Science degree in aerospace medicine in 1991 .

Astronaut activity

After he had unsuccessfully applied for the 17th NASA group in 1997, he was considered for the next selection: On July 26, 2000 he was selected as a mission specialist of the 18th NASA group.

ISS expeditions 19 and 20

Michael Barratt was selected as the flight engineer for ISS Expeditions 19 and 20 .

The launch of this space flight took place on March 26, 2009 with Soyuz TMA-14 . On 5 June 2009 Barratt led his first spacewalk from where he and Gennady Padalka passive antennas for the course -Dockingsystem on Zvezda installed module. A second exit took place on June 10th and lasted 12 minutes. He and Padalka removed a cover in the docking system of the Zvezda module. Both exits were necessary for the docking of the Russian Poisk module, which docked with the ISS in November 2009. Barratt returned to Earth on October 11, 2009, along with Padalka and space tourist Guy Laliberté with Soyuz TMA-14.

STS-133

On September 18, while he was still a participant in Expedition 20, Barratt was nominated as a mission specialist for the STS-133 mission to the ISS. The take-off took place on February 24, 2011, the landing on March 9. This flight was the last of the Discovery space shuttle .

NASA management

From January 2012 to April 2013, Dr. Barratt Manager of the Human Research Program at NASA Johnson Space Center. The program included applied health science research and its space flight risks. He returned to the astronaut office in May 2013 and led scientific payload training.
