Beginnings and time in the Netherlands

Bastos was trained in the youth department of the EC Pelotas . In the summer of 2001, the then 18-year-old midfielder moved to Europe for the Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam . After his first season there he was loaned to the first division promoted Excelsior Rotterdam within the city to collect match practice. However, Bastos did not make its breakthrough in Europe at this time. He couldn't get beyond the role of the joker and was rarely able to convince.

Brazil

After two years in the Netherlands, he went back to Brazil, where he first played for half a year for Athletico Paranaense and was then awarded for one year each to Gremio Porto Alegre and Figueirense FC . For Gremio Porto Alegre he scored four goals and prepared many more goals. At Figueirense FC he was a regular and high performer and scored an average of every third game.

Lille OSC

In the summer of 2006 Bastos went to the French first division club OSC Lille . He played his first game for Lille at the start of the season in a 2-1 away win over Stade Rennes on August 5, 2006. In the Derby du Nord between RC Lens and Lille, he scored his first goal for Lille on matchday 20 of the 2006/07 season . By the end of the season he had scored three league goals. In the following seasons he increased his goal risk significantly. So he met eight times in the league in the 2007/08 season and prepared two more goals. In 2008/09 he was fourth on the goalscorer list with 14 goals and was elected Team of the Year.

Olympique Lyon

After this successful season, Bastos moved in 2009/10 to Olympique Lyon as a replacement for the migrated Juninho within Ligue 1 . With Lyon he made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League , in which the club finally failed at the German record champions FC Bayern Munich . In the championship, the second place in the table remained behind Olympique Marseille . Bastos fulfilled the high expectations at Olympique Lyon, was a dangerous midfielder with ten goals in 32 league games and ultimately also convinced national coach Carlos Dunga of his qualities. On February 21, 2010 he managed a flawless hat trick in a 4-0 win against FC Sochaux within 21 minutes. The 2010/11 season was similar to the previous one. Although he scored fewer goals in the league, he prepared more goals and scored more goals in the Champions League. The 2011/12 season was disappointing for Bastos on an international level: The team won the Champions League qualification against Rubin Kazan, but surprisingly dropped out in the round of 16 against APOEL Nicosia . In the league too, Basto's club only qualified for the UEFA Europa League . For the 2012/13 season he was not set for the first time on the left offensive side. He only came to short appearances, but scored five goals in 726 minutes. At the end of the first half of the season, Bastos had played twelve league games and one appearance in the Europa League.

FC Schalke 04

In January 2013, FC Schalke 04 loaned Bastos until June 30, 2014. Schalke also secured a purchase option. Bastos made his first competitive game for Schalke on February 2, 2013 in the 1: 2 home defeat against SpVgg Greuther Fürth and scored the Schalke goal. On February 16, 2013 he scored both goals for Schalke in the away game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (2: 2). In the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Galatasaray Istanbul , he scored his first goal for Schalke 04 in this competition. At the beginning of August 2013, Bastos left FC Schalke 04 prematurely. The reason was an option contained in the contract, which said that FC Schalke 04 had to submit an offer to buy Bastos within five days as soon as a third club made an offer. After Bastos himself asked for a change, the loan deal with Olympique Lyon was dissolved.

al Ain Club and AS Roma

After the loan deal ended, Bastos moved to the al Ain Club , the then reigning champions of the UAE Arabian Gulf League , where he signed a three-year contract. After only six months, he switched to Serie A at AS Roma in January 2014 on loan and with a purchase option of € 3.5 million . The Brazilian won the runner-up with the Romans.

Return to Brazil

After Rome did not withdraw the agreed purchase option, Bastos returned to his home country Brazil in August 2014 and moved to São Paulo FC . With his club he reached the runner- up in the first year behind Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . The Brazilian champions then failed in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores 2015 . São Paulo finished fourth in the league and Bastos scored seven goals this season. The variable player was used primarily on the right wing, but also on the entire left wing and in the central midfield. In his final season for São Paulo, Bastos was less active, not scoring a single goal and finishing tenth in the table . In the Copa Libertadores 2016, however, he convinced and failed with his team only in the semi-finals at the eventual tournament winner Atlético Nacional .

For the 2017 season he then moved to city rivals and reigning champions Palmeiras . With Bastos as a left-back, the club could not repeat the success and became runner-up behind Corinthians São Paulo . In the 2017 Copa Libertadores , Palmeiras was eliminated on penalties in the round of 16 against the Colombian Barcelona Sporting Club . After holding positions at Sport Recife and América Mineiro, Bastos announced his retirement in October 2019.

National team

Despite good performances at Lille, Bastos was not nominated for the Brazilian national team until 2009 . It was only his move to Lyon that brought him into the focus of the then coach Carlos Dunga . On October 27, 2009, the winger was appointed for the first time for the colors of his country in the Seleção squad. He finally made his debut on November 14th. Bastos played as a left-back in the 1-0 win against England . Although he mostly plays in midfield at the club, he also played as a left defender in the subsequent games of the national team and consolidated his place in the starting line-up. Bastos did not play a single game in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , but was nevertheless appointed to the World Cup squad by coach Dunga in May 2010 . During the tournament Bastos was a regular in the position of left-back, where he was used in all five games. In the quarter-finals against the Netherlands , the team was disappointed. In the run-up to the World Cup, he scored his only goal for Brazil when he scored a goal in a 3-0 win in the friendly against Zimbabwe on June 2, 2010 .

Style of play

Michel Bastos was flexible and impressed with his precise passing game. He was primarily used in the left offensive midfield and made numerous goal situations with his very hard left shot. Occasionally he played in the right attacking midfield, dribbling from there into the center and looking for the goal. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the left-footer was used by then coach Carlos Dunga as a left full-back and was able to convince in this position with stable performances and dribbling along the sidelines.
