Michele Pittaluga International Classical Guitar Competition
The Michele Pittaluga International Classical Guitar Competition is an annual music competition for classical guitarists in Alessandria, Italy . The competition was founded in 1968 and has achieved international importance. In 1981 he became a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva , in 2010 a member of ISPA (International Society for the Performing Arts) in New York City and UNESCO in Paris . It is the oldest international classical guitar competition in Italy and one of the oldest in the world.
founder
The competition was launched in 1968 by the musicologist Dr. Michele Pittaluga (* 1915 † 1995 ) started as Città di Alessandria International Classical Guitar Competition on the occasion of the city's 800th anniversary. He received early support from Andrés Segovia , the first honorary president. At his suggestion, Alirio Díaz became chairman of the jury. Diaz took on this role for the first 30 years of the competition and was then artistic director until the 40th competition. Alirio Díaz remained Honorary President of the competition until his death in 2016.
history
At the beginning, the Michele Pittaluga International Classical Guitar Competition was solely dedicated to the solo guitar. From the 7th to the 11th competition, the competition participants were accompanied by an orchestra , but the guitar concert was only partially performed. The winner of the competition played it in full during the award ceremony. From the 12th competition, the final round was accompanied by a piano and only the winner played the full concert with the orchestra during the award ceremony. Occasionally the orchestral accompaniment was replaced by a string quartet . The finale has been orchestral or chamber music since 1974 . Since 1981 the program of the competition has been expanded to include repertoires with orchestra or string quartet based on the guidelines of the WFIMC .
From the year it was founded until 1996, the Michele Pittaluga International Classical Guitar Competition consisted of two competition rounds: a qualifying round and a final round. Three rounds have been held since the 30th competition: preliminary round, semi-finals and final.
After the death of Dr. Michele Pittaluga In June 1995 the name of the competition was changed to Michele Pittaluga International Guitar Competition - Premio Citta di Alessandria and from then on it was organized by the Organizing Committee of the Classical Guitar Competition "Michele Pittaluga" (Comitato Promotore del Concorso di Chitarra Classica "Michele Pittaluga"). Since then, Michelle Pittaluga's three children Maria Luisa, Micaela and Marcello Pittaluga have run the competition. Micaela Pittaluga took over the leadership of the organizing committee and presidency of the competition and Marcello Pittaluga became the permanent secretary of the jury. In the same year the competition was placed under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Italy and under the auspices of the Italian Commission for UNESCO.
The amount of the prize money has increased over the years from 500,000 Italian lire to 10,000 euros. A record deal with Naxos Records and a concert tour became recurring components of the award. The gold medal of the President of the Italian Republic has been awarded since 1997.
Related Competitions
In 1997 an additional competition was started, the International Composition Competition for Classical Guitar "Michele Pittaluga" with the idea of expanding the repertoire of contemporary guitar compositions . And in 2014 the International Junior Talents Competition "Pittaluga Junior" was founded.
