Mickey Hart (born September 11, 1943 ) is an American drummer and percussionist , who was best known as a member of the rock band Grateful Dead . Together with Bill Kreutzmann he formed the Rhythm Devils .

Hart has always been interested in percussion techniques, instruments and traditions from around the world. On his travels he visited the masters of various techniques all over the world and collected recordings and instruments. He wrote a number of books on the subject. His album Planet Drum with Vikku Vinayakram and various other guest musicians won the 1991 Grammy in the Best World Music category .

In addition, Hart wrote music for film and television (e.g. for the film Apocalypse Now ) as well as for major events such as the 1996 Olympic Games .

In 1994 Mickey Hart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Grateful Dead , and in 1999 he played with Woodstock III . In 2000 he received an honorary doctorate from the Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center. In 2009 his CD Global Drum Projekt (with Zakir Hussain and others) was awarded a Grammy for Best Contemporary World Music Album .

In 2016, the Rolling Stone listed Hart together with his band colleague Bill Kreutzmann as 34th of the 100 best drummers of all time .
