Microsoft Mobile headquarters in Espoo

Microsoft Mobile was a smartphone manufacturer headquartered in Espoo ( Finland ). The company emerged in 2014 from the acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services division by Microsoft . Terry Myerson was in charge of the company.

Under the takeover agreement signed by Microsoft with Nokia in 2013, Microsoft Mobile was allowed to sell mobile phones under the Nokia name for ten years. On May 18, 2016 Microsoft sold the development division for feature phones with the Nokia logo and thus also the name exploitation rights for these products to the Finnish company HMD Global .

The right to use the Nokia logo on smartphones was independently limited to two years from the start. As a result, smartphones were sold under the name Microsoft Lumia instead of Nokia Lumia from October 2014 , although the right to use the Nokia name was granted until April 2016. In addition, the contract contained a clause in which Nokia promised not to produce its own smartphones for two years or to issue licenses to contract manufacturers for the use of its own name for smartphones.

history

In 2011 Nokia's then CEO Stephen Elop , who had previously worked at Microsoft, announced that future Nokia smartphones would be equipped with Microsoft's Windows Phone . Nokia began to dominate the Windows Phone market with market shares of 92%. This practically ousted the previous market leader in the Windows Phone and Windows Mobile market, HTC .

In September 2013 Microsoft announced that it would buy Nokia's device and services division for $ 5 billion. The sale was completed in April 2014. 32,000 employees moved from Nokia to Microsoft, including former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who took over the management of the Microsoft Devices Group.

On July 17, 2014, it was announced that Microsoft will lay off 12,000 employees at Microsoft Mobile in order to reduce double occupancy (Microsoft / Microsoft Mobile). It's the biggest downsizing in Microsoft history.

In October 2014, Microsoft announced that it would sell Lumia series smartphones under the name Microsoft Lumia . New smartphones will bear the Microsoft logo. Asha, X and S40 / S30 series phones continue to bear the Nokia logo.

In July 2015, Microsoft announced that it would completely liquidate the production facilities it had acquired from Nokia. The products are to be manufactured by contract manufacturers in the future. For the remaining 7,800 employees in production, this meant the termination; a depreciation in the billions for the group. Of the 32,000 employees originally taken over, only 13,000 will remain with Microsoft, mainly working in product development and support.

On July 17, 2015, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Stephen Elop would be dismissed from his position as head of Microsoft Mobile / Microsoft Devices Group, while Jo Harlow, who was responsible for leading smartphone development, also left , the enterprise. These layoffs coincided with further restructuring at Microsoft. The Mobile Devices Group was merged with the Microsoft Operating System Group (OSG), the management of the new division was taken over by the former head of OSG, Terry Myerson. This step is intended to improve the collaboration between hardware and software developers. The management of the smartphone development was taken over by Panos Panay, who was previously responsible for the development of the Surface tablets .

On October 6, 2015 Microsoft presented the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 550 smartphones together with the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book, the latter only being mentioned briefly in the margin. These are the first Microsoft smartphones with the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system .

Stephen Elop, first CEO of Microsoft Mobile

May 18, 2016 Microsoft sold the development division for feature phones with the Nokia logo and thus also the name exploitation rights for these products to the Finnish company HMD Global ; the devices are manufactured by the Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile . From the formerly taken over by Nokia services and devices division, only the smartphone development remains with Microsoft, all other divisions were either sold or dissolved. At the same time, the former parent company Nokia announced that it would re-enter the smartphone and tablet market after the blocking period contractually agreed with Microsoft in 2014. On May 25, 2016, Microsoft announced that it would completely relocate the development of mobile devices to its headquarters in Redmond. The Lumia series will be discontinued. This ends the development and manufacture of Lumia smartphones in Finland. In December 2016, the production of Lumia smartphones finally ended with the discontinuation of the Lumia 950 / Lumia 950 XL models ; before that, Microsoft had already removed predecessor models and cheaper smartphone models such as the Lumia 550 from its range and its own online shop.
