Subfamily : Microweiseinae
Scientific name

The Microweiseinae are a subfamily of the ladybirds (Coccinellidae). They are the smaller of the two subfamilies that the ladybirds have been divided into since 2007, and comprise only around 3.5 percent of the species in the entire family.

description

The species of the subfamily Microweiseinae are very small, they hardly reach a length of 1.5 millimeters. They are not as conspicuously colored as most of the other representatives of the ladybirds. Monochrome types in brown, olive and black dominate. The surface of the body is hairy. They often resemble the rotten wood beetles (Corylophidae) or some stubber beetles (Endomychidae) than the ladybirds. Thus Delphastus hirtulus made in 1901 to the Stäublingskäfern and came only in 2011, after a recent description, back to the ladybugs. In many species the head is retracted far into the prothorax or bent down towards the abdominal side.

distribution

The Microweiseinae are native to tropical and subtropical ecosystems. They are found in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America and southern North America.

Way of life

The types of microweiseinae feed as many other species of ladybugs in both the larval stage as well as adult animals of aphids and their larvae. Despite their small size, some species are used in biological plant protection. The species of the genera Serangium and Delphastus are used to combat various whiteflies , especially in greenhouses.

Systematics

According to the results of morphological and molecular biological studies, 23 genera with around 150 species belong to the Microweiseinae.
