Miguel Sáenz
Miguel Sáenz Sagaseta de Ilúrdoz (born August 7, 1932 in Larache , Spanish-Morocco ) is a Spanish translator and writer.
Life
Miguel Sáenz was born in Morocco in 1932 as the son of an officer and spent his childhood and youth in North Africa: in Tétouan , Tangier , Sidi Ifni and in the Spanish Sahara . He then studied German philology at the Complutense University in Madrid .
Sáenz has translated the works of several German-speaking authors into Spanish, including Franz Kafka , Bertolt Brecht , Günter Grass , WG Sebald and Thomas Bernhard . He also translated from English, including William Faulkner , Henry Roth and Salman Rushdie .
Honors
- Miguel Sáenz has been a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry since 1999 .
- In 2002 he was the first Spanish translator to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Salamanca .
- In 2012 he was accepted into the Real Academia Española .
- In 2018, Sáenz was awarded the Friedrich Gundolf Prize for communicating German culture abroad .
