Michael William Krzyzewski (born February 13, 1947 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American basketball coach . Since 1981 he has been training the Blue Devils at Duke University in Durham , North Carolina . Because of its complicated last name, he is often simply only Coach K called. Krzyzewski's ancestors originally came from Poland . From 2006 to 2016 he also coached the national team of the United States , parallel to his college activities .

Career

Krzyzewski grew up in Chicago as the son of Polish immigrants. Until 1969 he studied at the Military Academy in West Point and played basketball there from 1966 to 1969 under coach Bobby Knight . According to Knight, Krzyzewski, as a player in the development position, was best known for his strengths in defense and good ball handling. Krzyzewski later recalled that he took away from Knight's game preparations and passion for the sport.

After his playing career, Krzyzewski served in the American Army from 1969 to 1974. From 1974 he worked for a year as an assistant coach at Indiana University . From 1976 to 1980 he returned to West Point as head coach. In 1980 he got the coach offer from Duke and accepted. During the 1984 Summer Olympics, he served under Bobby Knight as an assistant coach for the US selection. In 1986 the Blue Devils made it to the NCAA finals, but lost to Louisville .

Five years later they won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship against Kansas . The following year, 1992, the title was defended. That success was something that had last come to UCLA under John Wooden in 1973. The star player of the Blue Devils , Christian Laettner , was the only college player in the dream team around Michael Jordan , Larry Bird and Magic Johnson at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . Krzyzewski was an assistant coach on the staff of the US selection at the Barcelona games.

In 2001 Krzyzewski won his third NCAA title with Duke. That same year he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . On November 15, 2001, he won his 903rd game as a college coach, becoming the most victorious coach in the history of the first NCAA division by improving the previous record of his former coach Bobby Knight. Several professional teams tried to poach Krzyzewski, most recently the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004 , who wanted to hire him as Phil Jackson's successor . Krzyzewski refused and remained loyal to Duke. There he had a contract until 2011.

In the summer of 2006, Krzyzewski was also the coach of the US national team. At the 2006 World Cup , Team USA came third under Krzyzewski. At the American Championships in the summer of 2007, he won the gold medal with the national team and remained without defeat during the entire tournament, which the USA qualified for participation in the 2008 Olympic tournament in Beijing.

The USA won all of the games in the 2008 Summer Olympics tournament, winning the Olympic basketball gold medal for the first time since Sydney 2000 .

2010 Krzyzewski Duke led to victory in the Final Four , where the Duke Blue Devils were able to prevail in the final against Butler University and thus NCAA champions 2010. He also won the title with the USA at the Basketball World Cup in Turkey. 2011 Krzyzewski was by the magazine Sports Illustrated for Athlete of the Year chosen. In 2012, the US national team successfully defended their title at the 2012 Summer Olympics under Krzyzewski . In 2014 he won the 2014 World Basketball Championship in Spain with the US team and thus also defended the title.

On January 25, 2015, Krzyzewski won his 1000th game with Duke. He became the first coach of the first NCAA division to break the 1000 victory mark. In the same year he led the Blue Devils to his fifth NCAA championship, defeating the University of Wisconsin in the final . With five college championships, Krzyzewski became the most successful coach in the history of US college basketball after John Wooden (10).

In 2016 he defended the gold medal with the US national team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. After the tournament, Krzyzewski resigned as national coach as announced. He was succeeded by the coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich .

According to a March 2018 report in USA Today newspaper , Krzyzewski was the highest-paid coach in US college basketball in 2018 with a salary of around $ 8.9 million. He won five national NCAA championships with Duke University, reached the final four 12 times and won the ACC championship 15 times. As a coach of the US national team, he won Olympic gold in 2008, 2012 and 2016 and the basketball world championship in 2010 and 2014.
