Micro-lime
Microcalcification becomes visible in mammography when small calcium deposits have formed in the tissue of the mammary gland . Such small calcifications can be seen as white spots on the X-ray .
Medical importance
Microcalcifications are found as remnants of dead cells. It can be an indication of breast cancer . The number, sharp-edged shapes and certain geometric arrangements correlate with the risk of malignancy , i.e. the risk of breast cancer .
However, it also occurs in benign changes in the female breast, including mastopathy , cysts and dilated milk ducts. Ultimately, it is often only through a biopsy that it can be determined whether such a finding is benign or malignant.
