Milan Martić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Милан Мартић ; born November 18, 1954 in Martići near Knin ) is a former Yugoslav politician and leader of paramilitary associations in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Serbian Krajina during the Croatian War (1991 to 1995) and a convicted war criminal .

Life

Martić was the police chief of the city of Knin before the war. From January 4, 1991 until the Sturm military operation in August 1995, Martić held various positions, including Foreign Minister, Defense Minister and President of the RSK.

Martić, wanted by the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) since July 25, 1995 with an international arrest warrant, surrendered to the authorities on May 15, 2005.

On June 12, 2007, he was sentenced to 35 years in prison by the ICTY. It spoke to him of the murder, the torture as well as the persecution and displacement of Croats and other non-Serbs, attacks on civilians, the willful destruction of civil buildings and other crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war in the so-called " SAO Krajina ”, later renamed the Republic of Serbian Krajina , found guilty on 16 of 19 counts. He was acquitted of the charge of genocide .
