Milan Panić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Милан Панић ; born December 20, 1929 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian - American businessman and former politician.

Life

Milan Panić studied biochemistry at the Universities of Belgrade and Heidelberg . He was a member of a Yugoslav cycling team. In 1956 he left Yugoslavia and founded the pharmaceutical company ICN in Costa Mesa , California in 1960 , which is now known as Valeant Pharmaceuticals and with which he became a multimillionaire. He retained Yugoslav citizenship, but also got US citizenship in 1963. In 1991 he acquired the Serbian pharmaceutical company Galenika . In 1987, ICN launched a drug that was supposed to cure AIDS but was found to be ineffective.

At the suggestion of the President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , Dobrica Ćosić , he was elected Prime Minister of the country on July 14, 1992. In December 1992 he ran unsuccessfully against Slobodan Milošević for the office of Serbian President. On December 29, 1992, he was overthrown by a vote of no confidence. Shortly afterwards he returned to California. He married the nearly 40 years younger opera singer Milena Kitić , with whom he has a son born in 2001.
