The Tiyas military airfield , often referred to as T4 after a nearby pumping station , is located 5 km southwest of the village of Tiyas in Syria , on the road connecting Homs (80 km) and Palmyra (60 km).

The facility is officially operated by the Syrian Air Force , but is also considered the base of the Iranian armed forces in the Syrian Civil War . It was the target of air strikes in February and April 2018.

Civil war

During the Syrian civil war , fighters from the terrorist militia Islamic State attacked the T4 pumping station in July 2015, but were repulsed by the army and air force, according to Syrian state media .

In 2016 IS fighters attacked T4 again after defeating government troops in Palmyra .

In September 2017, state media reported a series of serious explosions in an ammunition dump at the facility.

Iranian allies with the government of President Bashar al-Assad use Tiyas as a base with official approval.

Attack from February 2018

On February 10, 2018, Israeli T4 fighter jets attacked. According to analysts, it was about the aim of the Israelis, arms sales to allied with Iran , Hezbollah - militia in Lebanon to destroy.

Attack from April 2018

T4 was hit by several rockets on the night of April 9, 2018, according to Syrian state media. Other missiles had previously been intercepted. According to SOHR observers, 14 people are said to have been killed on the site. At least seven of the victims were later identified as Iranian military personnel by the Iranian media.

Shortly before the attack, the Syrian Air Force flew attacks on Eastern Ghouta near Damascus in early April 2018 , in which it was accused of having dropped poison gas . Syrian state media therefore initially suspected the USA of being responsible for the attack on T4 after threats from President Donald Trump , and according to statements by President Emmanuel Macron, there was also speculation about a French attack , but the allegations were officially rejected. Israel initially did not comment on the April 9 attack. However, the Russian Defense Ministry accused the Israeli air force of launching eight cruise missiles on T4 with two F-15 fighter-bombers from Lebanon's airspace around 4 a.m. Three of them would have hit the target.
