Milka Trnina
Milka Trnina , also Milka Ternina (born October 19, 1863 in Vezišće , Austria-Hungary ; † May 26, 1941 in Zagreb , Independent State of Croatia ) was an opera singer .
Life
The soprano has performed in all major opera houses in Germany , Russia , the United Kingdom and the United States . From 1890 until her health-related retirement from the stage, she was a member of the Munich Court Opera ensemble. It was noticeable that, despite her great success at other theaters, she was only invited to the Bayreuth Festival once and in 1899 sang Kundry in Parsifal . In contemporary sources, differences were raised about an engagement at the Metropolitan Opera in New York . An evaluation of correspondence by Hannes Heer from 2012 showed, however, that the Bayreuth Festival management mistakenly thought she was Jewish and that she therefore received no further invitations due to the prevailing anti-Semitism in Bayreuth.
Her repertoire included the great roles in operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Beethoven's Fidelio , Richard Strauss ' ( Arabella ). She also shone in operas by Giacomo Puccini ( Tosca ) and Giuseppe Verdi ( Aida ). At the height of her career, on June 1, 1906, after the performance of the Walküre in Munich , Trnina announced her withdrawal with a single sentence: "Thank you, this was my last appearance!"
Trnina spent the following 35 years traveling, as an honorary professor at the Zagreb Music Academy (from 1913) training young singers and making charitable appearances.
One of her most famous students was Zinka Milanov . In 1897 she donated the proceeds of her farewell concert in Zagreb (1.992 crowns) to the Association for the Protection of the Plitvice Lakes (Croatian: Društvo za uređivanje i poljepšavanje Plitvičkih jezera ). This is why certain waterfalls in the Plitvice Lakes National Park bear their name. After her death, she was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb.
