The Minardi PS02 was a racing car from the Minardi-Asiatech team . Two cars of this type took part in all 17 qualifications of the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship , but could not qualify for all races.

background

Team owner Paul Stoddart also suffered financial difficulties in 2002. Sponsorship funds were initially missing, which led to various cost-cutting measures. It was not until the summer that new sponsors could be found, which, together with the TV money that was supposed to go to the Prost team, which has since gone bankrupt, secured the existence of the small team from Faenza in Italy.

technology

The Minardi PS02 had a 10-cylinder V- engine with a cylinder bank angle of 72 degrees. It was made of aluminum and had a displacement of 2995.7 cm³. With an output of 562 kW (764 hp) and a maximum speed of 17,400 rpm, the Asiatech drive was one of the weaker ones of its year. TAG Electronic System supplied the electronics. The engine weighed 105 kg and was 560 mm long, 605 mm wide and 538 mm high. The sequential six-speed gearbox manufactured by Minardi / X-Trac was installed lengthways and was shifted electrohydraulically semi-automatically.

The chassis was a monocoque made of sandwich panels with a honeycomb core with outer layers of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and aluminum honeycombs. The wheelbase was 3097 mm, the track width 1442 mm, the tank volume 145 liters. The car weighed a total of 508 kg. The suspension with torsion bar suspension had three dampers at the front and rear. A total of four chassis were built. Technical director was Gabriele Tredozi .

driver

A young driver, Mark Webber, was brought in for the 2002 season . The second car was shared by Alex Yoong and Anthony Davidson ; Davidson was there on two race weekends.

2002 season

The qualifying duel Webber and Yoong went 15-0 to Mark Webber. The duel between Webber and Davidson ended 2-0. In 17 double appearances, Minardi made it into the ranking 15 times. In contrast, there are 19 failures due to technical defects, accidents and non-qualifications. With a possible 2180 race laps, the Minardis drove 1368, which brought them to tenth place in the reliability statistics. With two world championship points, Minardi finished ninth at the end of the season. Mark Webber finished 16th in the World Drivers Championship with two points.

Painting

The cars were painted black and given several small sponsor stickers. There were also start numbers 22 (Yoong / Davidson) and 23 (Mark Webber).
