Miracle Laurie (born August 1, 1981 in Huntington Beach , California ) is an American actress .

life and career

Laurie was born in Orange County , California, to a Filipino-Scottish mother and a Canadian father. Her mother was one of the lead dancers on the television series Fantasy Island in the 1970s and 1980s and was still a singer after the series ended . Miracle got her first piano lessons at the age of five and a little later also acting lessons, and from the age of seven she was regularly on stage. She got her first lessons in hula at the age of three and has since performed alongside Hawaiian greats such as ukulele player Bill Tapia (1908–2011) and multiple Grammy winner Dennis David Kahekilimamaoikalanikeha Kamakahi . Almost her entire family was active in the arts, and her two sisters also learned Polynesian dances. At a young age, Laurie gained her first experience in the modeling business . She has appeared in magazines such as Harper's Bazaar , Seventeen and on the cover of Teen . At the age of eleven to fourteen, she was rated and booked as an adult model due to her size and adult appearance. After a few years as a model, she increasingly turned to acting. She received her bachelor's degree in drama from UC Irvine . In addition to numerous appearances during her college days, Laurie also appeared in numerous external theater productions.

Laurie auditioned a total of five times for Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer , but was never cast. Also in the official cast of Firefly - Der Aufbruch der Serenity , where she auditioned alongside Jewel Staite as one of the finalists for the role of Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye , she did not make it. Despite her good contacts - she also worked with Oscar-nominated Bruce Weber - for a long time she did not find her breakthrough in the film and television business. After some rather insignificant and insignificant film productions such as Opius and Roses , she made her first notable television appearance in 2004 when she was seen in an episode of Medical Investigation . In the following years she found a regular job in the vodcast Good Night Burbank . Laurie celebrated her real breakthrough in 2009. She was used in the pilot episode of The Carbonauts , which was discontinued immediately after the pilot aired. In the same year she was finally included in one of Joss Whedon's series: In the Dollhouse production , she was seen in a total of 15 episodes from 2009 to 2010. In addition, Laurie, who among other things also played an important role in San Francisco 2177 , also has some advertising experience.

Laurie is an avid ukulele player. With her husband, actor Christopher May , she founded the cover band Uke Box Heroes . She is fluent in French and can mimic British (BBC English), Canadian and French, as well as New York and Southern accents and dialects.
