Mirdza Ķempe

Mirdza Ķempe (married Ādamsone and later Naikovska ; born February 9, 1907 in Liepāja , † April 12, 1974 in Riga ) was a Latvian poet and translator .

Life

Mirdza Ķempe was born as the daughter of a writer and tailor in Liepāja at the time of the Russian Empire . There she also attended elementary school and later a secondary school. In 1923 she published her first poem in the newspaper "Kurzemes Vārds" and in the same year she translated Alexander Pushkin's drama Mozart and Salieri into Latvian. In 1927 she began studying at the Faculty of Economics and Law at the University of Latvia , which she did not graduate. Between 1928 and 1941 she worked for the Latvian radio in Riga, at times as a correspondent and translator. In 1931 she married the writer Eriks Ādamsons .

After the German attack on the Soviet Union, she lived in Astrakhan , Ivanov and Moscow and worked as a translator. In 1944 she returned to Riga, where she was artistic director of the "Latvian Puppet Theater" until 1947. Since 1943 she was a member of the Latvian Writers' Union. With this she was employed between 1948 and 1972 as a consultant for writers.

From 1973 she was a corresponding member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences . Mirdza Kempe was privileged as an artist in the Soviet Union, but never became a member of the Communist Party. In the last phase of her life she lived in poor conditions.

She died in Riga on April 12, 1974 and was buried next to her first husband in Rainis at her own request .

In 1989, a plaque with a picture of Mirdze Kempe was inaugurated in Liepāja. In Riga and Liepaja streets are named after her.
