Misadventures is the fourth studio album by the US rock band Pierce the Veil . It was originally supposed to be released in the summer of 2015, but a release was postponed several times, so that the album was announced and released for May 13th, 2016 in mid-March 2016. It is the follow-up to the album Collide with the Sky from 2012. Like its predecessor, it was released via Fearless Records . Spinefarm Records took over the distribution in Europe .

The regular album is home to eleven tracks, including the singles Texas Is Forever , Circles and The Divine Zero . The latter was published in the summer of 2015. The deluxe version includes two more pieces. These are acoustic versions of the tracks on the album Floral & Fading and Today I Saw the Whole World . Misadventures received mostly positive reviews in the English-language trade press. It is the first album that was able to position itself in the charts outside of the United States. The album reached chart listings in Germany , Australia and the United Kingdom , among others .

Musically, the album can be assigned to post-hardcore , even if individual pieces of the album have influences from other ways of playing punk or rock music , such as pop-punk or pop-rock . The group succeeds in walking the tightrope between post-hardcore and popular pop music . Artists such as Atreyu , My Chemical Romance and Panic! called at the disco .

As on the three previous albums, the songs are mostly about personal experiences of the singer Vic Fuentes, such as failed relationships. For the first time, Fuentes takes up a contemporary historical situation in a song: In Circles , he processes the events on the night of November 13, 2015 in Paris , in which at least 120 people died in a terrorist attack . While writing the songs, he was occasionally supported by his friend Curtis Peoples, Tom Denney and Brad Hargreaves of Third Eye Blind . Unlike on Selfish Machines and Collide with the Sky , the group worked without guest musicians.

Production history

prehistory

Singer Vic Fuentes and bassist Jaime Preciado announced in a video on December 23, 2013 that the musicians wanted to produce and release a new album in 2014. In an interview with the merchandising mail order company Impericon it was said that the group moved into the studio immediately after the European tour with Bring Me the Horizon , which took place between November 2013 and December 2013, and began to write their first new pieces. The musicians wanted to take their time writing the pieces as long as possible and not rush anything. In an interview that musicians conducted with the British music magazine Rock Sound , it was revealed that it took almost five months to write the new pieces. The group began writing the pieces in a small rented house in San Diego . The group later moved to Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains , where they wrote new songs for their previous album, Collide with the Sky .

According to an article in the Oakland Press , the band worked on their first new material during the Spring Fever Tour with You Me at Six , All Time Low and Mayday Parade (April – May 2013). The group announced Tom Denney , who was a former guitarist in the band A Day to Remember , as a participating partner . The musicians have worked with Denney in the past. This time Chad Gilbert from New Found Glory and Brad Hargreaves from Third Eye Blind should have been involved in the writing of individual pieces.

In an interview the group conducted with Poppy Reid of The Music Network while at the Soundwave Festival in Australia in March 2013 , Fuentes announced that Jenna McDougall, lead vocalist for pop-punk band Tonight Alive , was in a play on the new album should be heard as a guest singer. Both groups had toured together in the past. Most recently, McDougall supported the group at a concert by the band with Bring Me the Horizon. However, in a later interview with the Kerrang in August 2014, this announcement was denied as “too hasty”, even if there are some signs of cooperation.

“She's such a great person, she's so nice. We just got along well so I'm going to try and write something. "

“She is a really great and kind person. We get along well, so I'll try to write something. "

- Vic Fuentes : about Jenna McDougall

production

In mid-May 2014, the musicians began their songwriting work in the studio in South Park , San Diego. There the first riffs for the pieces Sambuka and Song for Isabelle were created . The pre-production of the album began in June 2014. The album was recorded in the Sonic Debris Recording Studio near Long Beach. On the same day it was said that the group was flying to Long Island - where their studio is located. The album is produced by Dan Korneff , who also produced Collide with the Sky . On July 20, 2014, the group paused recording and flew to Cleveland , Ohio to attend the Alternative Press Music Awards ceremony, which took place a day later. There the group was nominated in seven categories of which they won three. At this point the group was in the middle of the studio work. On August 4th, 2014, the recordings of drums and electric bass were finished.

The band wrote a total of thirteen pieces. After the group had finished writing and composing eleven tracks, they went into the studio. While working in the studio, the musicians noticed that two songs would not fit into the album concept, which is why they - already working in the studio - wrote two new songs for the album. Those two pieces were Sambuka and Song for Isabelle , which Fuentes wrote first. They were discarded and rewritten when Vic Fuentes stayed in the studio of David Hodges , a former Evanescence musician , during the preproduction of the song Circles . At the time of the interview with the Alternative Press, the group was already weeks ago. A three-month stay in the studio was originally planned. The musicians also interrupted work on the album during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil to be able to watch isolated games on television. This included all the games of the Mexican national team . In mid-September 2015 the recordings were almost completely finished. Vic Fuentes only had to play the vocal parts and make the final corrections. The musicians spent almost three months in the recording studio. Just writing the pieces took a little over a year. The importing and correcting of Fuentes' vocal tracks took another two months in the studio. As a result, Vic Fuentes had to take the recording equipment with him on the first section of the November 2014 world tour with Sleeping with Sirens and continue working on the album there. Vic Fuentes spent a total of four months alone in the studio in Long Island, while the rest of the band members flew back to California after finishing their recordings. In January 2015, Fuentes recorded additional audio tracks during the break between the two tour sections of the world tour with Sleeping with Sirens in the home studio in San Diego. A report in Alternative Press said the tour was booked so Vic Fuentes could have free time to write the pieces. According to the article, these have pushed him to the limit of his psyche.

On June 19, 2015, the group released The Divine Zero, the first official single from the album. Vic Fuentes admitted in an interview with the Kerrang that the song wasn't finished until shortly before it was released. He told the music magazine that the other tracks were not finished and the process could be delayed further due to the serious injuries guitarist Tony Perry sustained in a mountain bike accident just before the Warped Tour began . The musicians hope to complete and release the album after the Warped Tour. In an interview with Upset Magazine , which was published in September 2015, it was said that the group would release the album very soon. On December 22, 2015, after several postponements, the album was announced for a release in 2016. An article in the English-language Rolling Stone said that excessive touring and the ability to take your time while working on the pieces were decisive for the postponement of the album release. Finally, in mid-March 2016, the name, the track list, the artwork and the release date of the album were announced. The announcement said Vic Fuentes had been to New York City , San Diego , Seattle , Big Bear Lake , Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara for new inspiration for the album:

"I wanted every song to have real meaning, and thought that in spending time in different places, I'd find new inspirations - that's exactly what happened."

"I wanted each piece to have a real meaning and I thought about spending some time in different places where I could get new inspiration - and that's exactly what happened."

- Vic Fuentes : when the album was announced

In an interview with Alternative Press , Vic Fuentes said that individual fans of the group had managed to find the studio in which the musicians were working on the album, even though it was quite remote. This had already happened with the work on the previous album Collide with the Sky . At that time, some fans of the band managed to send small gifts and letters to the studio.

publication

The original plan was to release the album in 2014. However, it was announced in August 2014 that the album would be released in spring 2015. The reason for the delay was that the group had to write two new pieces because two previously written songs did not fit into the concept of the album in the opinion of the singer Vic Fuentes. In an interview between bassist Jaime Preciado and Rock Revolt Magazine , which appeared in the April 2015 issue of the magazine, it was said that almost every song the band wrote before the studio work was rewritten in the Long Beach studio . The group hoped to get the album out in early January 2015. However, the planned publication period was later postponed. A report by Alternative Press said that a week after leaving the studio, the musicians realized that the album would not finish Sleeping with Sirens until their joint world tour . In an interview with Yahoo on February 6, 2015, it was stated that the fourth album should be released sometime in the summer.

On June 19, 2015, at the start of the Warped Tour , which the band headlined, the group released their first single, The Divine Zero . After a release of the album had already been postponed several times for unknown reasons, it was announced in December 2015 that the album would be released in 2016. On March 15, 2016, rumors surfaced that the album will be released in May 2016 and will be named Misadventures . Accordingly, there was also speculation about the release of the single, which should be called Texas Is Forever , for March 24th and 25th, 2016. Three days after these rumors got around, the album was officially announced by the band and their label, Fearless Records . Texas Is Forever was rumored to be video-streamed on March 24, 2016 via Alternative Press . Almost five weeks later, the next song on the album was presented on April 26, 2016. This song is called Circles and was first played on BBC Radio 1 .

The pre-order phase for the album began worldwide on March 25, 2016, initially via iTunes . A little later, other digital music service providers followed with Amazon Music , Google Play and Spotify . The pre-order phase for the physical album version started on March 31, 2016 initially in the United Kingdom , the United States and Australia , whereby the pre-order phase for the album includes various extras, such as a case with special additional content, t-shirts, buttons and wall flags. The case includes a mug, a 200-page storybook with sketches, photos and lyrics from the album, as well as a bandana, bracelets and a viewfinder. The vinyl version is available through Caroline Distribution , which is owned by Universal Music . The album was released worldwide on May 13, 2016.

Song lyrics

Tony Perry from Pierce the Veil in the Live Music Hall in Cologne , 2016.

In a British Rock Sound article , the group was described as "a band for the lost, broken and lonely by the lyrics of the musicians." Fuentes said he wanted to make sure that every text was fun and inspiration for every piece widespread among the listeners.

"I want to make sure that every lyric to every song is something that people can enjoy and become inspired by."

"I want to make sure that every text in every song is something that people like and inspire."

- Vic Fuentes : opposite the rock sound

For the lyrics from the fourth studio album, Fuentes went camping in 2014 in addition to the regular writing sessions in order to be able to write more song material, which makes them even more personal than older pieces by the band. According to bassist Jaime Preciado, the album also features stories that the musicians experienced with fans during meet-and-greet events before and after their concerts. The lyrics are also about self-esteem and betrayal . The events of the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris are said to have influenced the lyrical content of the album.

The song Circles deals with the terrorist attacks in Paris, with Fuentes mainly describing the events in the Bataclan Theater. In an interview with Radio.com , singer Vic Fuentes gave further details on the development of the piece. He said that while writing the lyrics, he imagined what it would be like if he and his friends got into such a situation. The background for the writing of the song was the statement of the Bataclan band Eagles of Death Metal that some concert goers tried to protect their friends from the attacks of the terrorists. Gold Medal Ribbon , meanwhile, is about the first great love of singer Vic Fuentes, who died on New Year's Day 2014. He wrote Floral & Fading for Danielle Perry, his current girlfriend. The eleventh song, called Song for Isabelle , was written by Isabelle, an acquaintance Vic met while touring overseas. This piece also includes a passage from the 1994 song Back in the Day by the American rapper Ahmad , which is a nod to Curtis Peoples. Texas Is Forever , the album's first official single, is about a former friend of Vic Fuentes. He said he had published a song about her on every Pierce the Veil album so far released.

Album cover and album title

The album cover was designed by Mike Cortada based on a sketch by Vic Fuentes. A representation of a Swiss Army Knife takes the place in the foreground, showing all the “tools”, including blades - which, according to Fuentes, were only drawn as decorations - a bottle of whiskey , an apple hanging on mechanical, praying hands , a joint , a red cross , needles and pills , and another hand that pulls the trigger of a gun . In the background are stars, a dollar bill, which dangles around inaccessible on the crescent moon , and fireworks behind palm trees . These objects, both in the foreground and in the background, each have a specific meaning:

The leaking whiskey symbolizes loved ones whom the musicians have lost over time. The apple represents the time the group spent in New York City while recording . The mechanical hands that assume a praying posture is a representation of the loss of the Catholic faith in which singer Vic Fuentes grew up. The Joint, Red Cross and Pills are said to be Fuentes' first political commentary, in which Fuentes endorses the use of soft drugs as a therapeutic measure, while the needles are meant to be a reminder of what can happen when hard drugs are misused. Fuentes said in an interview with Alternative Press that he included this motif in the concept for his friend, Tyson Srevens, who died in October 2014 and the former singer of the now defunct band Scary Kids Scaring Kids . The hand that operates the pistol, which shoots a rocket instead of projectiles, symbolizes singer Vic Fuentes' desire to escape personal pressure.

The stars in the background refer to the time of day when Vic Fuentes mostly worked on the album, while the fireworks and the palm trees refer to a special line of song from Song for Isabelle . The banknote on the moon represents today's music business and is to be understood as a criticism of all those who forget that musicians are only human and of all those who have lost their passion for music and write new pieces just for the money.

The title of the album, Misadventures , came about according to an interview with Vic Fuentes, as the album work is associated with many twists . Fuentes said the musicians put a few years of their lives into the album. He described the entire development process as a kind of " method acting " in which the musicians had so many positive and negative experiences.

success

Commercially

According to Billboard , the album was sold between 50,000 and 55,000 times in its first week of sales in the United States, with that figure based primarily on traditional album sales. It sold almost twice as often as its predecessor, Collide with the Sky , which went over the counter 27,000 times within the first week. By the end of 2016, the album had sold approximately 105,000 copies in the United States alone.

Misadventures is the band's first album to hit the charts outside of the United States. It rose to number 17 in the British and 98th place in the German album charts .

Both The Divine Zero and Texas Is Forever made the leap into the Hot Rock Songs - and the Rock Digital Songs charts - a week after their release ; however, an entry into the official single charts of the United States remained withheld. The song King for a Day from the album Collide with the Sky already made it into the two genre-specific charts. Circles only entered the Hot Rock Songs charts . German-language reviews

Front singer Vic Fuentes in the Live Music Hall in Cologne, 2016.

Dennis Müller of FUZE Magazine wrote that nowadays hardly any other band is in a position to "give the emocore of the 2000s a makeover", like Pierce the Veil. Even if the album is not really exciting, the critic attests the album a lot of fun - albeit of the fast kind. Pierce the Veil do what they do best, according to Müller, and they are among the best at that. The album proves that one more time. Peter Kubaschk from the online music magazine Powermetal.de describes the group's music as "poppy, melodic punk with subtle screamo passages and a few hardcore elements." Kubaschk names big names in the scene like Panic! at the Disco , My Chemical Romance and Atreyu as musical references. The tempo is kept reasonably high so that there is hardly any space for ballads. Floral & Fading is described as sentimental, but according to the critics, it doesn't seem cheesy. Even Texas Is Forever is highlighted positive. Kubaschk is of the opinion that the musicians know how to write lively pieces that can still achieve catchy tunes.

Eike Cramer from German-speaking Metal Hammer wrote that Pierce the Veil, together with A Skylit Drive, are among the representatives of post-hardcore who are musically very close to the border to pop music . On Misadventures, so Cramer, the band is at times in the neutral zone of pop-punk . Songs like Circles and Texas Is Forever are real hits that are in no way inferior to A Skylit Drives 500 Days of Bummer or the in-house King for a Day . However, the critic describes that even with the successful production and the own exploration of the genre boundaries, the independence has been lost, which is why Cramer did not give the album the highest rating.

English language reviews

Andy Biddulph from British Rock Sound referred to the album as the " Chinese Democracy of the Warped Tour scene" in terms of the waiting period of several years . He said that the group followed the musical path they had set on their previous work Collide with the Sky , could polish up further. Biddulph particularly praises the piece Bedless , which he described as a " pop-rock opera that has to be heard to be believed". According to the reviewer, the lyrics hit the hardest and provide a fascinating insight into the things that have been floating around in Fuentes' mind over the past four years. The album has kept its originality in order to bring the band even further forward. Peyton Bernhardt of Australian Blunt Magazine wrote that the voice of Vic Fuentes navigates the complexity of the album and becomes part of the chaos of Misadventures . The theatricality evokes shadows from the 2007 debut album A Flair for the Dramatic , while the historical charm and harmonies are reminiscent of the group's second album, Selfish Machines .

Pierce the Veil in the Live Music Hall in Cologne, 2016.

Ryan J. Downey, who has been with the group for the Alternative Press for years , found positive words about Misadventures . The band sounds somehow opulent and theatrical like Muse or even Queen . He described the album's opener, Dive In , as the best song the group has ever released to date. When writing and rewriting the pieces, Fuentes managed to emphasize the maximum meaning and emotion behind every single syllable. Drummer Mike Fuentes and bassist Jaime Preciado lay the foundation stone for singer Vic Fuentes and guitarist Tony Perry, according to Downey, who both can "snake" their way through the sound structure with their agile guitar playing from top to bottom. In conclusion, he wrote that Misadventures offer everything that the genre has in the past. Emily Marvel from Idobi Radio gave the album full marks and wrote that each track could have fit on Collide with the Sky or Selfish Machines . Still, according to the critic, every song on the album would stand out in a special way. Jana Angeles of the Australian online magazine Spotlight writes that the album takes the listener on a journey of love, life and self-awareness and that every seasoned fan realizes that the reflective music is the best of its kind. Angeles wrote that the album was so timeless that it could have been released 100 years later and still retain its value.

  49. ^ Ryan J. Downey: Alternative Press (Issue 334): Life by Misadventure, p. 46: "People kind of let me do my thing almost to a dangerous point. But what would happen if one day I just went too far on these things? The one person who knew all of these things, just how far I'd gone this time, was my girlfriend, Danielle. […] Yes, the frontman who said in the band's first AP cover story (AP 296, March 2013) that he didn't know when he'd ever be ready for a relationship, is now happily anchored in one. He's even publicly acknowledging that PTV's adventurous and ambitious power-pop anthem 'Floral & Fading' was written specifically for her. "
  50. Ryan J Downey: Alternative Press (Issue 334): Life by Misadventure, p. 46: "Another real life person is referenced by name in the album closer," Song for Isabelle ". It contains a lyric from the '90s Ahmad hit' Back In The Day '", which is a nod to Vic's best friend, Curtis Peoples. But the song is about a friend Vic met while on tour overseas who was in and out of treatment for mental health issues.
  51. Ryan J. Downey: Alternative Press (Issue 334): Life by Misadventure, p. 48: "Among the pages of lyrics, there's a sketch by the frontman's own hand that's remarkably similar to the finished 'Misadventures' album cover. It turns out Vic determined exactly how he wanted the cover to look and all that it should represent when he turned the concept over to artist Mike Cortada, who executed Vic's vision magnificently. "
  52. ^ A b Ryan J. Downey: Alternative Press (Issue 334): Life by Misadventures, p. 48: "A bottle of whiskey pours out for lost loved ones. The apple represents the time the band spent in New York. Gray fireworks behind palm trees reference a specific lyric in "Song for Isabelle". The stars around the knife are meant to invoke night time ("I've lived most of my life at night. Ninety percent of what I do is in the dark."). He calls the image of a joint and a medical symbol his first "political commentary". Conversely, the needle is a somber reminder of the dangers of hard drug use. Vic says he put it on there for his friend Tyson Stevens, the Scary Kids Scaring Kids frontman who passed away in October 2014. The mechanical praying hands are open to broader interpretation, but they do have something to do with Vic's increasing sense of lost faith . He was raised in the Catholic Church but as the years go by, he's felt more and more disconnect from it. [...] Another hand on the cover is the one shooting a rocket ship instead of a bullet. This is me trying to get the fuck away from a lot of the pressure. [...] The dollar bill dangles just out of reach from the moon. This symbolizes the business of music. [...] It's an angry commentary to any person who forgets that we're people. It's also a comment on people still doing this who clearly don't want to be and don't have the passion for doing it anymore but are doing it for money. "
