The Miskito are an indigenous people who live today mainly on the Atlantic coast in the border area of Nicaragua and Honduras . More than 100,000 people of this ethnic group live in Nicaragua today. The main settlements there are in the Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Norte (North Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, also called Miskito coast ), with its capital Bilwi (Puerto Cabezas) and the town of Waspán on the Wangki River ( Río Coco ). Around 25,000 Miskitos live in Honduras today.

The name Miskito is likely derived from the name of an earlier king who was called Miskut.
