from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Missa brevis in C is a Missa brevis in C major by František Xaver Brixi , which is sometimes referred to as the Missa aulica (Courtly Mass). The work sets the Latin Ordinarium Missae to music for four soloists, four-part choir , 2 trumpets , timpani , 2 violins and basso continuo .

history

František Xaver Brixi , or Franz Xaver Brixi, became regens chori (choir director) at Prague's St. Vitus Cathedral in 1759 at the age of 27 and held the position until his death in 1771. He composed a variety of sacred works for the liturgy, including more than 100 masses. He composed the Missa brevis in C for four-part choir with solo parts, two trumpets, timpani, two violins, organ and basso continuo. The performance time is given as 25 minutes. Karlheinz Ostermann, the editor of the first print, emphasizes the vocal melodies for the soloists, as well as the simple themes for the choir, short imitative sections and the “extremely optimistic mood” of the work.

The fair exists in several copies, which speaks for its popularity. They were found in the Sedlec monastery in Kutná Hora , in Litoměřice and Prague, in Austria in the Kremsmünster monastery and in Germany in the Ottobeuren monastery . Some of the copies describe the timpani or the trumpets as ad libitum . Some copies call the Mass Missa aulica ("Courtly Mass"), an epithet that is also used for Mozart's Mass in C major KV 337 .

The fair was first published by Carus-Verlag in 2003, and was also published in 2004 by Musikverlag Dr. J. Butz .
