Mitropa Cup 1936

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mitropapokal 1936 was the 10th edition of the international cup competition of Central European club football. The best teams from Austria , Hungary , Czechoslovakia , Italy and Switzerland took part. It was mostly the champions, runners-up and cup winners of the respective countries. The participants played in a pure cup mode with two legs in the most important continental football competition in the period before the Second World War. In the event of a tie after two games, a playoff was played. Twelve clubs started in the round of 16, eight other clubs played a qualification beforehand. The defending champion Sparta Prague reached the final again, something that no other title holder in the history of the competition had achieved before.

The final took place within a week on September 6th and 13th, 1936 in Vienna and Prague . Defending champion Sparta Prague and the Austrian club FK Austria Wien qualified . At home, the Viennese could not go beyond a 0-0, but secured the trophy for the second time after 1933 with a surprising 1-0 away win , which went to Vienna for the fourth time. The top scorer was Giuseppe Meazza of semi-finalist Ambrosiana Inter with ten goals; it was already Meazza's third title as Mitropa Cup top scorer after 1930 and 1933.
