The Moby Dick is a passenger ship of the Bonner Fähr- und Fahrgastschifffahrt GmbH & Co. KG ; the company also operates the Rhine ferry Rheinnixe . The eye-catching ship, which is shaped like a whale , mostly operates on the Rhine between Bonn and Koblenz . It was built in 1976 at the Oberkassel shipyard. The inspiration and namesake was a white whale that swam up the Rhine to Bonn in 1966 and was named after Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick .

construction

The Moby Dick measures 45 m in length, the width of the hull at the level of the waterline is 6.54 m and 11.17 m above all. The height from keel is 9.60 m with an average draft of 1.10 m and an empty weight of approx. 120 tons. The drive consists of three MAN 6-cylinder diesel engines with an output of 147 kW each. The steering system consists of a hydraulically operated rudder behind the fixed stern propeller and two Schottel rudder propellers built into the sides, approximately amidships. A covered main deck and an open deck together offer space for a maximum of 496 people.

The main deck has large windows at the front end, separated by white struts, depicting the teeth or whales . The panels are tapered at the front to form the mouth and have a fin at the back. The ship is painted in light (sides of the main deck) and dark (panels) blue, about halfway along there is a painting reminiscent of an eye. Until the end of the 1980s, the ship had a color scheme with a high proportion of orange.

Rides

There are landing stages in Königswinter and Linz on the main route to Koblenz . In addition, the Moby Dick sometimes goes to Cologne , up the Moselle or on other special trips.

Wedding ceremony on board

The city of Bonn offers the possibility of civil weddings on the Moby Dick, as long as it is on Bonn's banks of the Rhine. After the marriage has taken place, the ship can cast off.

Damage in 2008

On November 6, 2008, the ship, anchored in Bonn, was rammed and damaged by the Dutch tanker Lazio. The damage should be repaired by spring 2009 at a shipyard in Oberwinter . Meanwhile, the Moby Dick runs regularly on the Rhine again.
