Mohamed Brahmi ( Arabic محمد براهمي Muhammad Brahmi ; * May 15, 1955 in Sidi Bouzid ; † July 25, 2013 in Tunis ) was a Tunisian politician.

After the revolution in Tunisia in 2010/2011 , he founded the people's movement on March 8, 2011 and remained its party leader until July 7, 2013, which won two seats in the Constituent Assembly on November 22, 2011 under his leadership . Brahmi was now a member of parliament for the Popular Front , in which his popular movement collaborates with the Labor Party , the Democratic Patriots Movement , the Ba'ath Movement , the Arab Democratic Vanguard and the Socialist Democratic Movement .

Life and politics

Brahmi studied at the University of Tunis until 1982, where he received a degree in accounting. He was an active member of the Arab Progressive Unionist Students until 2005, when he founded the Nasserist Unionist Movement - an illegal party under Ben Ali .

Brahmi was known for his socialist and Arab-nationalist views, as he saw himself in the tradition of the Egyptian Gamal Abdel Nasser . He was a practicing Muslim and had no particular reputation as a critic or even an advocate in the ruling Islamist Ennahda movement.

assassination

Brahmi was shot to death outside his home in Ariana on July 25, 2013 by two men on a motorcycle in front of his wife and children. After he was shot 14 times, he died the same day in the hospital in the Ariana district of Tunis. After his death, thousands of his supporters, including his relatives and party members of the People's Movement, protested in front of the Ministry of the Interior, accusing the Ennahda movement and its supporters of the murder.

Brahmi's death followed the assassination of opposition leader Chokri Belaïd on February 26, 2013 - both of whom were members of the Popular Front. Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou stated, "The same 9mm automatic weapon that killed Belaïd also killed Brahmi." Brahmi received a state funeral. In this context, Prime Minister Ali Larajedh announced new elections for December 17th (which were delayed until 2014 ).

In August 2013, Prime Minister Ali Larajedh accused the Salafist organization Ansar al-Sharia, among other things, of being behind the killings of Chokri Belaïd and Mohamed Brahmi.
