Mohed Altrad (born March 9, 1948 or 1951 in Syria ) is a Syrian - French entrepreneur and writer . He is the founder and owner of the Altrad Group , which equips large construction sites with scaffolding and construction machinery and which had 17,000 employees in 2015.

Life

Mohed Altrad claims to be the result of rape. His father was a Bedouin tribe leader in Syria and his mother, a member of the same tribe, near Racca. Cast out by the tribal chief, his mother gave birth to him alone in the Syrian desert and died very soon after she was born. His date of birth has not been passed down, so he set a day himself, 1948 or 1951 are possible years.

He grew up with his maternal grandmother, raised in great poverty and the shame of being the son of an outcast woman. His grandmother made him a shepherd. Thanks to a resident cousin, he settled in Raqqa . As a Bedouin, he was denied access to school. He taught himself to read by listening to the teacher in college. He noticed his gifts and helped him. So he finished high school at the age of 17.

In 1972 he started studying computer science in Montpellier on a scholarship for talented students and had to learn the French language. After graduating, he received his PhD from the University of Paris VIII in 1978 . He first worked as a computer scientist in the major corporations, Alcatel and Thomson , then at ADNOC, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company . Back in France, he founded an IT company with an English partner, Richard Alcock, "France Informatique Électronique et Telematique" (FIET), which they sold to Matra in 1984 .

In 1985 they used the proceeds to buy a medium-sized company from the Herault region, MEFRAN. The company is bankrupt, but specializes in scaffolding. Altrad believes in the company and renames it Altrad. The company was successfully restructured. He built a management team with specialists in acquisitions and financing. Acquisitions, mergers and company formations take place in Europe and around the world. Finally, in 2015, the Altrad Group took over the Dutch industrial plant manufacturer Hertel Group, which has 70 branches worldwide. The company now has a turnover of 1.8 billion euros with a total of 17,000 employees. More than 15 countries are represented within the group and 8 languages ​​are spoken. The group is a world leader in concrete mixers, a European leader in scaffolding and wheelbarrows, and a leader in France in piping equipment for municipalities.

Altrad was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2005 and an officer of the same in 2014. In 2015 he received the "EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award" from the management consultancy Ernst & Young .

Since 2011, Altrad has also owned the Montpellier Hérault RC rugby club , whose women's team won French championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Altrad writes management books and has published five novels by 2015.
