Poppy is also a flower (original title: The Poppy Is Also a Flower ) is a star-studded anti-drug film by Terence Young from 1966. The French-Austrian-American co-production was based on a story by Ian Fleming .

action

When the US drug investigator Benson is murdered in the Iranian desert after trying to buy opium from a nomad leader , the United Nations sends agents Lincoln and Jones to the Persian Gulf to smash the drug ring there. Their assignment first leads the two agents to Tehran , where they meet Linda, allegedly Benson's widow. A short time later, however, it disappeared again. Together with UN scientists, the two agents succeed in intercepting a cargo of opium, marking it with a radioactive tracer and putting it into circulation again, in order to then track it through the drug traffic with the help of a Geiger counter . They stay on the trail of the opium for a while until it disappears.

Finally, the Naples police reported that they had confiscated the said cargo from a certain Playboy named Serge Markos in Monte Carlo . Lincoln is already on the way and is looking for the wealthy Markos on his yacht . When he gets there, a happy party is going on, at which he surprisingly meets the attractive Linda again. Looking for answers, Lincoln tries to question Marko's wife Monique. However, this is hopelessly drug addict and can therefore give no information. The next morning, Lincoln is found dead. Agent Jones now has to carry on the job alone. To do this, he follows Markos on a train to Paris . Also this time the mysterious Linda is on board, who finally reveals herself as a UN agent. After escaping an attack by Markos' men, they return to his yacht, where they eventually find enough evidence to expose Markos as both the head of the drug ring and the murderer.

Reviews

For the lexicon of international films , poppy is also a flower was "a puzzling, because fluidly staged agent film based on a model by 'James Bond' creator Fleming". Although "the plausibility of the story [...] is clouded by some improbabilities", it "at least gets by without ostensible sex and violence". The Protestant film observer saw in the film an "[d] average tear [...] who uses the information about the fight against illegal drug smuggling only as a pretext for a spread-like act". The result is simply “superfluous”.

The US magazine Time called poppy a flower as "another James Bond film without James Bond". So a large number of viewers would like "that it would have been shot without a film". The “best thing that can be said about this film” is “that it works like a drug, but is hardly addictive”. According to the Motion Picture Herald , "an impressive cast with popular names [...] is what makes this film so appealing". However, it is "a shame that the dialogue from Jo Eisinger's script often does not do justice to the story". Weekly Variety found that "fortunately the all-star cast" was able to "master individual characters sufficiently to make their little roles believable".

Awards

In 1967, Eli Wallach won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for his role in Poppy Is Also a Flower ; he prevailed against the also nominees Leo G. Carroll and Leonard Nimoy .
