The term Mole referred to one as a dam in a lake , a river or into the sea towering mound, secured by a stone or concrete construction.

It serves as a breakwater . A mole can support a harbor wall on the outside and also be developed as a pier on the protected inside . A pier can protrude several hundred meters into the sea and be straight or curved.

A particularly long pier in Germany is the 1450-meter-long pier in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen, built between 1889 and 1912 .
