geography
Molinges is located at 360 m , about 8 km west-southwest of the city of Saint-Claude (beeline). The village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Bienne , slightly elevated on a terrace on the south side of the river in a valley widening, at the northeast foot of the ridge of the Roche de Joux.
The area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part is occupied by an approximately 1 km wide valley widening of the Bienne, which flows from east to west through the flat valley floor. The floodplain is flanked on both sides by steeply rising slopes, some of which are criss-crossed by ledges. The Rogna plateau runs to the south; here, at 686 m, the highest point in Molinges is reached. The eastern border is formed by the Longviry , which emerges from a deeply cut valley above Molinges into the valley widening of the Bienne. The place is part of the Regional Nature Park Haut-Jura (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Neighboring towns of Molinges are Pratz in the north, Chassal in the east, Larrivoire and Rogna in the south and Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude in the west.
history
Molinges has belonged to the Saint-Claude Abbey since the 9th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Molinges served as an important transshipment point from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century. The tree trunks felled in the High Jura were transported to the Bienne from the port of Molinges and then rafted to Lyon. At the beginning of the industrialization of the place was the establishment of a marble grinding shop in 1827, in which marble and limestone from the area were processed until 1975. This marbrerie by Nicolas Gauthier carried out important interior decoration orders.

In addition, there are now a few small and medium-sized businesses, including companies in the plastics industry and eyewear manufacturing. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Oyonnax and Saint-Claude.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road from Oyonnax to Saint-Claude . There are other road connections with Viry and Vulvoz. The closest connection to the A404 motorway (Saint-Martin-du-Frêne-Oyonnax) is around 17 km away. Molinges has a train station on the railway line from Oyonnax to Saint-Claude.
