Mollicutes (Latin mollis = "soft", cutis = "skin", the soft-skinned) denotes a class of bacteria . They belong to the department of the Tenericutes . They used to be part of the strain of the mostly Gram-positive Firmicutes , but are themselves Gram- negative because they do not have a cell wall . They represent the smallest and simplest known organisms, and they live parasitically on other cells. The tiny mollicutes sit on or in their host cells and extract many of the compounds they need for life. Pathogens are found particularly in the mycoplasma family . The genome of the Mollicutes is very small and lacks numerous genes for the synthesis of vital molecules (such as amino acids ). Just like the lack of a cell wall, this is based on adaptation to the parasitic way of life.

Representatives of the Mollicutes are dreaded contaminants of cell cultures in research laboratories because their small size and flexible cell structure allow them to pass through bacteria-proof filters . An average of 30% of all cell cultures are said to contain mycoplasmas. The most common contaminants are Mycoplasma hyoorhinis , M. arginii , M. oral and Acholeplasma laidlawaii . The mycoplasmas can change physiological and morphological parameters of the infected cells and thus influence the results of various experiments. Cell cultures must therefore be checked regularly for contamination.
