Mondeuse Blanche

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The white wine variety Mondeuse Blanche is an autochthonous variety of the Savoy region and is grown in the AOC appellation Vin de Savoie and in the VDQS area Vin du Bugey . However, their distribution is extremely low. In 1999, only 5 hectares of vineyards were surveyed in France .

The variety results in quality wines with a high acid content that age extremely well and can have a life expectancy of more than 30 years.

According to José Vouillamoz , Mondeuse Blanche and Mondeuse Noire are in a parent-child relationship. Louis Levadoux, a French ampelographer, assigned Mondeuse to the "famille des Sérines" grape variety family, to which the Syrah , Roussanne , Viognier , Altesse and Marsanne blanche varieties also belong. Accordingly, the variety would come from the south-east of France. In the past, a Mondeuse Grise was described by the ampelographer Pulliat, but it is believed to have died out.

Parent of the red Syrah grape variety

In 1998, however, the Mondeuse Blanche gained additional importance. According to DNA analyzes by the University of California in Davis, the well-known red grape variety Syrah emerged from a presumably natural cross between Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is woolly hairy, the tips are greenish with a slightly bronze tinge. The light green young leaves are slightly hairy and very bronze in color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and clearly indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is shouldered, medium-sized and has dense berries. The round or slightly elongated berries are medium-sized and green-gold in color. The aroma of the berry is quite neutral, but sour.

The grape variety ripens around 20 days after the Gutedel and is therefore early ripening by southern French standards, so that it can ripen in the mountainous regions of Savoy.

Synonyms
