Monica Morell , actually Monica Wirz-Römer , (born August 6, 1953 in Menziken ; † February 12, 2008 in Zurich ) was a Swiss pop singer .

Life

The young pop singer celebrated her greatest successes in Germany in the early 1970s . With her title "I'll never start anything on a Sunday" she was in the Swiss and German charts for months . According to legend, which either she or her record company started, the song is said to have originated after her alleged friend Thomas (only called Thommy in the song) died in a motorcycle accident. However, this thesis was denied by her first and last friend Ueli Eberhard, as well as the text author Gerd Gudera in the program "Colon" of the Radio DRS 1 on November 19, 2009. Fate would have it that ten years later their only child, the son of the same name (Thommy) died as an infant. The single was sold 1.5 million times. In 1973 the equally successful title “Please don't believe it” followed . Originally she was supposed to sing this song for Switzerland at the Concours Eurovision de la Chanson 1973 in Luxemburg , but had to let Patrick Juvet go first.

"Later, when is that?" was the singer's third success in 1974. Until 1976 she was regularly in the top 50 of the German sales hit parade, mostly with melancholy-sad songs such as "Danny, my friend" , "Hello, there is nobody here" , "I" and "The best men are usually already taken" . There were also several television appearances in disco and the ZDF hit parade .

At the end of the 1970s, Monica Morell withdrew from the music business and became the landlady and then co-owner of a small auction house in Erlenbach . After her first marriage, she lived in Ebmatingen, Zurich . Their second marriage broke up shortly after the sudden infant death of their only child, who was born in 1982. She generously supported the “Strubeli” animal shelter in Hegnau / Volketswil in Zurich . Monica Morell developed polyneuropathy and later cancer, to which she succumbed at the age of 54 after many years of suffering.

There was a dispute over her inheritance of around 40 million francs. She bequeathed part of her fortune to the Denk an mich Foundation .
