Monika Zofia Pyrek-Rokita (born August 11, 1980 in Gdynia ) is a former Polish pole vaulter . In 2005 and 2009 she was vice world champion.

Life

Pyrek won the silver medal at the 1998 Junior World Championships . In the adult division, she was seventh at the European Championships in the same year . She achieved the same placement when she first participated in the Olympics at the 2000 Games in Sydney . Her first major successes were winning the bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton and fourth place at the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis. In these two years 2001 and 2003 she was voted athlete of the year in Poland.

At the 2004 Olympics in Athens Pyrek opportunities were given to a bronze medal, but her Polish rival Anna Rogowska she said on the fourth place. At the athletics meeting of the Golden League in Brussels on September 3, 2004 Pyrek set the Polish national record with 4.72 m, which was later increased by Rogowska to 4.76 m and then on July 22, 2005 to 4.80 m.

At the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki , Pyrek was able to turn the tables against her compatriot Rogowska and she won the silver medal with 4.60 m. Rogowska failed already at the height of 4.50 m. The achievements of the world champion Jelena Isinbayeva , however, were a long way off. Isinbayeva won the world championship with a world record height of 5.01 m. At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 Pyrek again won the silver medal behind Issinbajewa with 4.65 m. In Osaka at the 2007 World Championships , she jumped 4.75 m, a new personal best. With the same amount as silver and bronze, she was fourth but missed a medal due to the higher number of failed attempts. Shortly afterwards it increased in Stuttgart to 4.82 meters.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Pyrek came in fifth. In the following year she won the silver medal at the World Championships in Berlin with a jumped height of 4.65 m together with the American Chelsea Johnson behind her compatriot Rogowska, who won gold with 4.75 m.

In 2011 she was tenth at the World Championships . At the European Championships in Helsinki in 2012 and the Olympic Games in London in the same year Pyrek did not get beyond the qualification. She ended her career in early 2013.

Pyrek had a competition weight of 52 kg with a height of 1.68 m.
