action

A probe of NASA , which was looking for suspected alien life forms, crashed six years before the start of the action on Northern Mexico from as an introductory text informs. After alien life forms (octopus-like animals over 100 meters long) had developed, the area, the so-called infected zone , was cordoned off.

Photographer Andrew is in Mexico, near the infected zone, to take sensational pictures of victims of the alien attacks, which are now part of everyday life for the local population even outside the zone. Against his will he is supposed to bring Samantha, the spoiled daughter of his publisher, back to the USA from Mexico before all roads are closed for the next six months because the mating season or egg-laying season of the "monsters" begins, in which they come ashore and are more active and dangerous. Andrew is supposed to escort Samantha safely to the coast so that she can take the ferry around the infected area. Andrew has to pay $ 5,000 for the ticket. An alternative route is only the dangerous route through the zone. In the evening, Samantha and Andrew get a little closer on a trip to the city, but Samantha refuses any concrete advances. The local night acquaintance, who then took Andrew home in a tequila rush, stole his passport, ticket and money that morning (he had also kept Samantha's belongings). Only with the help of Samantha's precious engagement ring can you now buy an illegal trip through the infected zone. They get into the zone by means of Mexican smugglers. The militias tell them the secret of the zone. The extraterrestrial life has laid its eggs in mushroom-like formations in the trees and US poison gas bombs are supposed to kill them before they become giant octopuses on their way through the rivers in the ocean and come back to the highlands to lay eggs again. That is why gas masks are also distributed to the population. Their armed companions are killed in a nightly "monster" attack, so that Samantha and Andrew have to start their journey alone through the jungle to the US border wall, which is supposed to prevent the "monsters" from reaching US territory. During the whole trip they got closer and closer, Samantha told about her fiancé and her problems with her father and Andrew about his six-year-old son, who comes from a short relationship and for whose birthday he wanted to be in the USA because he gave him him otherwise rarely sees.

After they pass the wall, they discover that the monsters have already crossed the border and parts of Texas have been evacuated. Both find refuge in a gas station and call the rescue unit that is supposed to pick them up. But the gas station is haunted by two monsters, but they perform a kind of mating ritual, which Andrew and Samantha watch with fascination. Then they hear helicopters and kiss long before they are supposedly rescued by the US military by dragging them into their vehicles rather rudely. This is followed by the plot that was shown at the beginning of the film. In shaky shots over night vision goggles you can see an alien attacking the vehicle column. The soldiers shoot at the alien being, while Andrew pulls the apparently seriously injured Samantha from the fray. Then permission is given over the radio to kill the creature with an air strike.

Reviews

“Monsters is a poetic science fiction film that drifts its protagonists through the Central American jungle for a long time, only sporadically implanted elements of alienation and relics of the monster war in the natural setting and tells unusually unsentimentally about the rapprochement between the couple. In the subtext, Edward's infection scenario develops into a clear metaphor for the fear of illegal immigration in the United States. "

- Martin Schwickert : Zeit.de

"Science fiction film flirting with realism, whose threatening mood is destroyed by a sloppy script full of logical breaks."

- Film service

“Monsters largely defies the conventions of the genre. While in other representatives the appearance of the monster is the real attraction, the giant, octopus-like creatures can hardly be seen in the cinema debut of the English computer graphic artist Gareth Edwards. […] While the monster film Cloverfield had a very high budget, but was disguised as a cheap amateur video, it is exactly the opposite with Monsters. At least outwardly, it is anything but a low-budget film and even looks really good. "

- Michael Kienzl : Critic.de

“Monsters, the directorial debut of special effects specialist Gareth Edwards, who was also responsible for the script and camera work, is one of the cinema surprises of the year. Despite a budget of less than 500,000 US dollars, the film can impress with its special atmosphere and breathtaking appearance. "

- Moviepilot.de

"A quiet road trip as a shop window into a surreal world that is both frightening and beautiful."
