The Montross is a volcano on the Kerguelen , an archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean to that part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands are.
At 1850 m ( Grand Ross ) and 1721 m (Petit Ross), the double summit of Mont Ross forms the highest elevation of the Massif Gallieni on the peninsula of the same name in the southern part of the archipelago. The first ascent by Jean Afanassieff in 1975 has only been followed by two expeditions to the summit (2001 and 2006).
The mountain was named after Sir James Clark Ross (1800–1862), an English Antarctic explorer and navigator who visited the islands in 1840 with his ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror .
