Monti (Rione)
Monti (Italian for mountains ) is the I. Rione (district) of Rome . It includes the hills Esquiline , Viminal and Quirinal , which belong to the classic Seven Hills of Rome and which gave the district its name.
history
In ancient times, the district was one of the most densely populated areas of the city. When the city center of Rome relocated to the Field of Mars ( Campus Martius ) in the Middle Ages , the hills were largely abandoned and were covered by gardens and vineyards until the 19th century. The medieval name of the district was Regio Montium et Biberatica after the Via Biberatica, which crossed the Trajan's markets .
coat of arms
The coat of arms shows the three stylized, eponymous hills.
