Morecambe is a seaside resort in northwest England and administratively belongs to the City of Lancaster in the county of Lancashire .

Morecambe is located on Morecambe Bay , an approximately 20 km wide, mudflat bay of the Irish Sea . The city has around 45,000 inhabitants (as of 2003).
history
Morecambe was created in 1889 from the merger of the villages of Bare , Poulton-le-Sands and Torrisholme . Numerous ships and submarines were scrapped in Morecambe , including parts of the imperial German submarine fleet , which had fallen into British hands in 1918, or the Majestic . In the mid-20th century, Morecambe flourished as a vacation spot. While Blackpool to the south was mostly frequented by visitors from Lancashire, Morecambe was the destination of holidaymakers from Yorkshire and Scotland . The Miss Great Britain competition also took place here from 1956 to 1989 . In the meantime, however, the tourist flow has subsided.

None of the two piers that once protruded into the sea and shaped the city have survived today. Several amusement centers such as the “World of Crinkley Bottom”, the “Bubbles” aquapark and “Frontierland” had to close. The west of Morecambe in particular developed into a problem area at times, but investments are now being made there again in new construction projects. Typical of this is the renovation of the Midland Hotel, an Art Deco building that reopened in 2006, and the new edition of the Morecambe beauty pageant.
The Heysham nuclear power plant has been located south of the city since 1983 , and a second unit was added in 1988, producing 2490 MW of energy .
Morecambe hit the headlines on February 5, 2004 when 21 Chinese guest workers were caught by the incoming tide and drowned while collecting mussels in the tidal flats off the coast of the city.
Attractions
In Morecambe there is a statue of the comedian Eric Morecambe (actually Eric John Bartholomew), who named himself after his hometown and became famous beyond the UK. Also worth seeing is the Victoria Pavilion, also known as Morecambe Winter Gardens, which once housed swimming pools and a theater with a restaurant and dance hall.

Morecambe is the terminus of a branch line that connects the city with nearby Lancaster . Another route leads to Morecambe's southern suburb of Heysham, from where there is ferry service to the Isle of Man . There are also bus connections to several cities in Lancashire.
Sports
The local football club is called Morecambe FC and plays its home games in the Globe Arena . The club currently plays in the fourth English division, Football League Two .
