Mother's Finest is an American funk , rock , soul and crossover band founded in 1970 by married couple Joyce “Baby Jean” Kennedy and Glen “Doc” Murdock in Atlanta , Georgia .
history
Her debut album Mother’s Finest was released in 1972 . Another album , also titled Mother's Finest , wasn't released until four years later on Epic / CBS . It contained the ironic Nigizz Can't Sing Rock 'n' Roll, a controversial song that caused a stir. Her first single, Fire , released in August 1976, peaked at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States . The third album Another Mother Further played with the association of Motherfucker . The album became the springboard for the career of the multicultural rock band and contains the group's biggest hit in the US with Baby Love .
With their appearance in the second ARD - Rockpalast-Nacht from 1978 ( Eurovision broadcast ) in the Grugahalle in Essen (which was newly released on DVD together with a Rockpalast concert in 2003) they became known to a larger audience in Europe and achieved cult status. At the end of the 1970s they produced partly soul-oriented albums and two hard rock albums in the early 1980s . The band caused confusion when their guitarist "Moses Mo" was given his real name Gary Moore on the LP One Mother to Another . This often led to the incorrect assumption that the Northern Irish guitarist of the same name, Gary Moore, had joined the band. Mother's Finest broke up in 1983, "BB Queen" joined Molly Hatchet . "Baby Jean" then started a solo career under her real name Joyce Kennedy and released two LPs ( Lookin 'for Trouble and Wanna Play Your Game ).
Joyce Kennedy, Glenn Murdock, Gary "Moses Mo" Moore and Jerry Seay reunited in 1989 and brought out the LP Looks Could Kill with drummer Dion Derek Murdock (son of Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock) . In the 1990s they were back with the crossover album Black Radio Won't Play This Record and with new guitarist John Hayes. The last studio production, Meta-Funk'n Physical from 2003 with returnees “Moses Mo” and the new drummer Kerry Denton, was more oriented towards hip-hop and electronic beats.
Her biggest hits are Baby Love , Piece of the Rock and Mickey's Monkey , a cover version of a 1963 top 10 hit by the Miracles .
In the summer of 2011 they appeared in Wiesen , Austria as the opening act for Santana .
