The titles of the European Motorcycle Championship in 1934 were at the XI. Awarded the FICM Grand Prize , which was held on June 23, 1934 in Assen ( Netherlands ) as part of the X. Dutch TT on the 16.536-kilometer Circuit van Drenthe .

The European Grand Prix took place for the first time as part of the Dutch TT . At the time, the Assen route was the fastest road circuit on mainland Europe and made the highest demands on pilots and machines.

Race courses

In the 175s, the Belgian Yvan Goor on an Italian Benelli prevailed against his compatriots Gaston Barbé , who started under the pseudonym "Dickwell" and Maurice van Geert . For Goor it was the second title win in the 175 cc class after 1930 when he won his home race in Spa-Francorchamps in a DKW .

In the 250 cm³ class, the German DKW works drivers Arthur Geiss and Walfried Winkler quickly took off. The two went wheel to wheel into the last lap. At the finish, Winkler was over a minute ahead of the second-placed New Imperial pilot Les Archer . Geiss had stopped about 100 meters from the finish line without fuel because he had refueled a lap too early and had to push his bike to the finish. He was overtaken by Archer about 30 meters from the finish. For Walfried Winkler from Chemnitz , it was the first and only European Championship title of his career.

In the class up to 350 cm³, the Briton Jimmie Simpson won his fifth and last European Championship title on Norton . He was followed by the two Velocette pilots Walter Rusk and Alec Mitchell . This makes Simpson the most successful pre-war motorcycle European Championship driver.

In the half- liter class , the 30-year-old FN factory driver Pol Demeuter from Belgium won ahead of his team mate Erik Haps , who started under the pseudonym “Noir” , and the Dutch Husqvarna driver Arie van der Pluym . Haps gambled away the title on the last lap when he fell while in the lead, but was still able to save second place. The German starters Toni Bauhofer , Otto Ley and Bernd Rosemeyer all had to shut down their machines with technical defects. The two British favorites Stanley Woods (Husqvarna) and Jimmie Guthrie (Norton) also did not reach the goal. They fell and were injured in the process. Only a week later, Demeuter, "Noir" and the 500cc European champion from the previous year , Gunnar Kalén from Sweden , fell in the 500 cc race for the German Grand Prix on the Badberg square , today's Sachsenring in Hohenstein -Ernstthal took place, lost his life.
