Mount Prospect in Cook County is a suburb of Chicago in the northeast of the US state of Illinois and part of the Chicago metropolitan area . In 2000, Mount Prospect had 56,265 residents; until the census in 2010 , the population had decreased to 54,167.

The Mount Prospect parish covers an area of ​​26.42 km², all of which is land. With an average height of 204  m , it is higher than the surrounding area.

Mount Prospect is 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The O'Hare International Airport , the largest airport of Chicago, located 14.9 km south of Mount Prospect.

Mount Prospect is bordered by Prospect Heights to the north, Northbrook to the northeast, Glenview to the east, Des Plaines to the southeast, Chicago O'Hare Airport to the south, Elk Grove Village to the southwest, Schaumburg to the west and Rolling Meadows to the northwest.

Mount Prospect is 22 km west of Lake Michigan , the border with the neighboring state of Wisconsin is just 60 km north of Mount Prospect.

The closest major cities are, besides Chicago, Milwaukee in Wisconsin, 123 km north , Wisconsin's capital Madison (197 km northwest) and Rockford (112 km west).

Interstate 90 runs from Chicago to the northwest on the southwestern outskirts . US Highway 14 runs through the center of Mount Prospect in a northwest-southeast direction and forms the town's main street. US Highway 12 runs parallel to this at a distance of about one kilometer .

The Northwest Line , which belongs to the METRA system and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad and connects the city of Woodstock with downtown Chicago, runs through Mount Prospect right next to Highway 14 .

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 , the population was 56,265. These were distributed over 21,585 households in 15,152 families. The population density was 2129.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 8,112 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 835.8 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 80.6 percent white , 1.8 percent African American , 0.2 percent Native American and 11.2 percent Asian and 4.1 percent other. 2.0 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 11.8 percent of the population were Hispanics who belonged to any of the above groups.

23.0 percent were under 18 years of age, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 31.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.8 percent 65 and over. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 98.9 men, and 96.4 for those over 18 years of age.

According to a study done between 2005 and 2007 estimate, the median income per household was was 65,120  US dollars , the median family income 81,826 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 44,585 and that for women was $ 32,218. The per capita income was $ 26,464. Around 3.1 percent of families and 4.6 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
