Mournful Congregation is an Australian funeral doom band from Adelaide that was formed in 1993.

history

The band was formed in September 1993 by guitarist, bassist and singer Damon Good. Good is mainly responsible for the songwriting. The number of members fluctuated several times in the further history of the band from one to three. In 1999 the band's debut album was released under the name Tears from a Grieving Heart . In 2002 the compilation The Dawning of Mournful Hymns was released , which contains newly mastered demo material , consists of two CDs and extends over two hours. In 2005 the album The Monad of Creation followed. In order to promote the 2009 album The June Frost , the first appearances followed in February of that year. In March Misery went on a tour of the east coast region of Australia before going on a European tour . In 2011, The Unspoken Hymns , a compilation consisting of songs that were previously only released on vinyl , and The Book of Kings, the next album were released. Stuart Prickett joined in as a live guitarist for an appearance at the 2012 Evil Invaders Festival . Then it went on tour through the USA , before a national tour with Procession followed in September . In 2013 the albums Tears from a Grieving Heart , The Monad of Creation and The June Frost were re-released via Osmose Productions . In the same year the group took part in the Roadburn Festival . In 2014 the EP Concrescence of the Sophia was released over 20 Buck Spin . In 2016 the band could be seen at the Migration Fest .

style

Cody Davis from metalinjection.net assigned Tears from a Grieving Heart to Funeral Doom. He noted that the songs are about ten to 13 minutes long , except for the Elemental , which is less than a minute long . The album can be heard that it had an influence on later releases, such as Uns The Tomb of All Things . Mournful Congregation is one of the most important and long-lived bands of the genre and is comparable to Thergothon on the album . Kostas Panagiotou from Pantheist stated in the Metal Hammer interview with Christian Hector that he would assign the group to Death Doom rather than Funeral Doom. Jan Wischkowski from metal.de also assigned the band to Funeral Doom in his review of The Book of Kings , although it was more depressing than Ahab or Funeral . The songs are difficult to access and not easy to digest. The group used heavy guitar walls and wailing riffs , while the vocals were soulful, intense and poignant, ranging from growls to plaintive vocals. The songs are usually very long.
