Muʿāwiya II.

Muʿāwiya II. , [ Muˈʕaːwija ] (معاوية بن يزيد Muʿāwiya ibn Yazīd ), († 684 ) was the third caliph of the Umayyads (683-684).

When the Umayyad troops lifted the siege of the rebellious Mecca after the death of Yazid I (680–683) , the unrest spread further. Muawiya II. Ibn Yazid (the son of Yazid I ) could not prevent large parts of the empire from falling to the newly proclaimed caliph Abdallah ibn az-Zubair (684-691). Even in Syria , the revolt of the Banu Qais threatened the rule of the Umayyads. Before countermeasures were initiated, however, Muawiya II died in April 684 during a plague epidemic. He was hardly older than 20 years.

This aggravated the crisis of Umayyad rule considerably, since Muawiya II had left no direct descendants and his brothers were also very young and therefore unsuitable for assuming the office of caliph. Soon the leaders of the Umayyad clan agreed on Marwan I (684–685) as the new caliph. With this the Umayyad line of the Marwanids came to power.
