The current building was designed by Ben van Berkel and opened on September 14, 1999 by Queen Beatrix . With its strict lines and light colors, the building is intended to create a strong contrast to the park. Since it is mostly made of glass, it is also jokingly referred to as "aquarium", "het zwembad" (swimming pool) or "het blokkendoos".
