Sultan Mustafa II

Mustafa II ( February 6, 1664 ; † 1704 ) was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1695 to 1703 . He was a son of Mehmed IV and Emetullah (Gülnusch) .

Mustafa tried to prevent the Habsburgs from entering his empire and to recapture Hungary , but his army was defeated by Prince Eugene in 1697 in the Battle of Zenta . In 1699 he concluded the Peace of Karlowitz , in which Hungary and Transylvania fell to Austria, the Morea to the Republic of Venice and Podolia to Poland . During his reign, Peter I succeeded in conquering the Azov fortress on the Black Sea in 1697 .

1703 Mustafa II was deposed by the Janissaries and his brother Ahmed III. appointed the new sultan.

Museum reception

In the Military History Museum in Vienna is the seal of Mustafa II. Issued. It is a brass signet with a pointed oval seal area (19 × 26 mm) with the wording "Mustafa, son of Mehmed Han, always victorious" , including the year of the accession to the throne "1106 (the Hejra )" (according to the Christian calendar that Year 1695). The sultan's seal can be seen together with a second seal of a certain Ismail and a red silk, gold embroidered sack. In the campaign of 1697 ( Great Turkish War ) - as is customary in the Turkish army - the seal was given to the Commander-in-Chief, Grand Vizier Elmas Mehmed Pasa, who had to carry it with him at all times. The Grand Vizier was killed in the Battle of Zenta , the seal was captured from Prince Eugene of Savoy , who presented it as a trophy to Emperor Leopold I , and subsequently it was handed over to the Army Museum by the Imperial and Royal Treasury .
