Mother compass

Since various electromagnetic fields act on the direction display of the compass in an airplane (as in watercraft) through the drive, radio and many other technical systems, it is necessary to install the compass in the aircraft in a special way. For this reason there is the mother and daughter compass system.

The mother compass was permanently installed in the fuselage of the aircraft, usually behind the pilot's seat. It consisted of a largely vibration-free and suspended, liquid-damped magnetic compass (or a gyro compass ). The non-magnetic housing of the compass was made of Bakelite . It was possible to attach small magnets to this housing to compensate for the compass. This was done on so-called compensation washers.

The compass display was tapped electrically and transferred to the subsidiary compass in the dashboard. A parent compass can have any number of daughter compasses, such as on large watercraft or large aircraft.
