My Bloody Valentine is an Irish-British rock band formed in Dublin in 1983 and based in London since 1985 . Together with bands like Lush , Slowdive , Curve and Ride , she shaped the shoegazing genre .

Band history

The original members of My Bloody Valentine were guitarist and singer Kevin Shields and drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig, who had known each other since childhood in the 1970s and had already played together in various bands in Dublin. Together with Dave Conway, My Bloody Valentine was finally founded in 1983; They took their name from the title of a Canadian horror film . After touring the Netherlands and Germany, they recorded their debut EP This Is Your Bloody Valentine in Berlin in 1985 .

After moving to London and making some personnel changes, the line-up of the band stabilized in 1987 and now consisted of Shields, Ó Cíosóig, guitarist and singer Bilinda Butcher and bassist Debbie Googe. During this time they produced several EPs; My Bloody Valentine achieved their breakthrough in 1988 with the You Made Me Realize EP , released on Creation Records , and the following EPs and albums.

After the costly production of Loveless Creation Records for an independent label had brought financial problems in 1991 , My Bloody Valentine switched to Island Records . After the band spent approximately £ 500,000 on Island Records on a studio and recording with no usable results produced, the record company ended their contract without any release. Then the band fell apart.

During the inactivity of My Bloody Valentine, Kevin Shields worked with Experimental Audio Research , Curve and Primal Scream as well as occasionally as a producer and remixer. Colm Ó Cíosóig recorded an album with Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star . In 2003, Sometimes from the Loveless album was used in Sofia Coppola's film Lost in Translation along with four new titles by Kevin Shields. There were rumors of a reunion in 2004, but these were not confirmed. It wasn't until 2007 that several concert dates for the UK were announced, half of which sold out immediately. In 2008 and 2009 the band gave a series of concerts, including at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark and the Benicàssim in Barcelona.

After 22 years, the band released their third album mbv in early February 2013 .

style

Her style, a mixture of multi-layered guitar tracks, vocals mixed in the background and the use of guitar feedback , made My Bloody Valentine trend-setting for the British independent music scene in the early 1990s. The English music press later coined the term shoegazing for this type of music . The band named The Velvet Underground , Sonic Youth , Cocteau Twins , Wire and The Jesus and Mary Chain as influences; Kevin Shields also cited The Beach Boys as a personal influence.

Kevin Shield's elaborate and energetic feedback guitar sound had a formative effect on American bands from the grunge environment such as the Smashing Pumpkins or Dinosaur Jr. in the early 1990s .
