The mycetoma or mycetoma (also called Madura foot and Madura mycosis ) is a chronic granulation tumor that occurs primarily in the tropics , but also in the subtropics .

It is mainly caused by fungi that are introduced into a wound on the skin , for example from an injury with wood splinters or thorns when walking barefoot . In this case, it is called a eumycetoma . The pathogens include the fungal genera Madurella (especially Madurella mycetomatis ), Allescheria and Candida as well as Monosporium apiospermum and Scedosporium apiospermum . The incubation period ranges from several days to months. If, on the other hand, bacteria , for example from the genus Streptomyces or the Nocardia species Nocardia madurae , are the cause of the disease, it is referred to as an actinomycetoma . (This occurs mainly in Latin America as a painful form of mycetoma).

The diagnosis is made on the basis of the material obtained from the tumor by a surgical biopsy.

Therapy is especially the aktinomyzetische form of mycetoma initially with antibiotics ( sulfonamides , cotrimoxazole and streptomycin ). In the case of the fungus-related form, surgical treatment should primarily be carried out , if necessary also with beam resection .
