Neggrette

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Négrette is a red wine variety . It comes from southwest France and is still at home in the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region . The variety gets its name from its dark color - "negre" means black in Occitan and from the diminutive suffix -tte . It dominates in the cuvées of the appellations Côtes du Frontonnais and Vins de Lavilledieu . It is also used in the red wines of the Fiefs Vendéens . The late-ripening variety is prone to powdery mildew , downy mildew , raw rot and too strong winds because of its thin skin . It produces aromatic, very pleasant red wines with a high proportion of anthocyanins and a low proportion of tannins (see also the article on phenols in wine ). The wines with an intense violet aroma are very pleasant even when they are young, but they can mature for a few years in the bottle.

It is often rumored that she came to her present home Fronton with the Crusaders from Cyprus (where the grape variety Kypreiko Mavro was Greek: black ) in the 12th century . In addition to its name, however, the fact that it also played a major role in the Gaillac wine-growing region into the 19th century speaks against this . It is therefore probably an autochthonous grape variety of the southwest.

In California and Australia , the Pinot Saint George cultivated there was identified as Négrette by the French ampelographer Pierre Galet in the 1980s . The grape variety can also be found in Argentina , Bulgaria and Mexico . The fact that the name is also a synonym for the red grape variety Mourvèdre adds to the confusion . In addition, it must not be confused with the independent grape variety Négrette de Nice. A total of 5 clones with the designations 581 and 663 (the highest quality) and 456, 580 and 582 are approved in France . In 2007 the area under vines was 1,319 hectares .
