The NFL Draft 2019 was the 84th selection process for new players ( Draft ) in the American Football for the season 2019 of the National Football League (NFL). The draft took place in Nashville , Tennessee , April 25-27, 2019 . As the worst team of the 2018 season , the Arizona Cardinals had the right to be the first team to select a player. The Cardinals selected quarterback Kyler Murray as their number one pick. The Minnesota Vikings were allowed to select the most players with a total of twelve picks, the New Orleans Saints the fewest with four picks.

Award process

The host for the 2019 NFL Draft, as well as the host for 2020, was selected from the cities of Cleveland / Canton , Denver , Kansas City , Las Vegas and Nashville. On May 23, 2018, the NFL announced that the 2019 draft would take place in multiple locations in Nashville, home of the Tennessee Titans .

Early selection

To be eligible, players must have graduated from high school for at least three years. The deadline for the younger players for the draft was January 14, 2019. With a total of 135 players who were still eligible to play for the college, a record number of underclassmen signed up for the draft.

Draft Needs

NFC West

The Arizona Cardinals had the worst team the first right to vote and have been with the quarterback Kyler Murray from the University of Oklahoma , the 2018 Heisman Trophy as the best won college football player, and defensive end Nick Bosa from the Ohio State University associated. In the 2018 NFL Draft , the Cardinals selected Josh Rosen as the new quarterback in tenth place , but due to Rosen's poor performance in the 2018 season, Murray's selection was not unlikely. There is a need for improvement in the offensive line and the wide receivers in particular .

The San Francisco 49ers had the second pick after the Cardinals and they still have weaknesses , especially on the defensive line, despite the signing of pro bowler Dee Ford . In addition, the Niners are looking for safes and wide receivers.

The Seattle Seahawks are considered to be well positioned in the offense, but due to the injury problems of their top receiver Doug Baldwin , there is a need for the wide receivers. In defense, the Hawks need a second good player in pass rush and a cornerback position .

The Los Angeles Rams , in the Super Bowl LIII against the New England Patriots defeated, need a second strong defensive tackle next to the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald and more depth in the offensive line. With Todd Gurley , the Rams have one of the best running backs in the league, who is suffering from a protracted knee injury. Due to the departure of backup CJ Anderson , the Rams are missing a replacement for Gurley.

NFC North

The Detroit Lions were able to sign some good players in the Free Agency. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement in some positions, especially in defense, which has numerous gaps in addition to defensive end Trey Flowers , who came from Super Bowl champion New England Patriots , and cornerback Darius Slay . In addition, the Lions are looking for new play stations on the wide receiver and tight end positions .

The Green Bay Packers were weakened by departures from the wide receivers and the linebackers . In addition, a second safety is missing in the secondary .

The Minnesota Vikings missed the play-offs in the preseason despite the signing of Kirk Cousins as a new franchise quarterback and an actually well-positioned team. The main reason for this was the weak offensive line, which could be improved with the draft. There is a need for this position following the departure of defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson . In addition, the Vikings need backups for the injury-prone running back Dalvin Cook and tight end Kyle Rudolph .

Due to the signing of Khalil Mack , the Chicago Bears only enter the draft in the third round. The Bears are looking for reinforcements in the defensive backfield and offensive line. We are also looking for a running back with good passing skills.

NFC East

The New York Giants had by switching from Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns two Erstrundenpicks available, but it is also next to the running back position on the rookie Saquon Barkley could convince almost everywhere improvement. The departure of Beckham Jr. could not be fully absorbed by the new addition Golden Tate , as was the change of Olivier Vernon . The Giants are also looking for a successor to long-time franchise quarterback Eli Manning .

The Washington Redskins have brought in Case Keenum as a replacement after the serious injury of Alex Smith , who is not considered a new franchise playmaker. Above all, the Redskins lack good wide receivers, and there is also a need for the Pass Rush.

At the Philadelphia Eagles , running back Jordan Howard and wide receiver DeSean Jackson were able to close two gaps in the offense, which is why the focus is on defense. The Eagles need a replacement for defensive end Michael Bennett , who moved to the Patriots, as well as a second cornerback and linebacker.

The Dallas Cowboys reached the play-offs in the preseason and are well prepared for the 2019 season. The wide receivers and the defense line could be improved in the draft.

NFC South

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers want to stick to Jameis Winston as a playmaker despite criticism of Jameis Winston , which means that an improvement in the wide receivers is most likely in the offense. In defense there is a need for linebackers and safeties.

The Atlanta Falcons disappointed with bad luck with injuries and a weak offensive line in the 2018 season. In addition to the offensive line, the defense is seen as a weak point that needs an upgrade at the defensive ends, linebackers and safeties.

The Carolina Panthers show similar weaknesses. There, too, there are problems in the O-Line, and pass rushers and linebackers are also sought.

The New Orleans Saints gave their first round pick in the 2019 draft to the Green Bay Packers to secure the services of defensive end Marcus Davenport . The Saints, who were unlucky in the play-offs in the previous two years, are also considered to be one of the best franchises for 2019 and have no major weaknesses. In the offense, the Saints need a little more depth in the offensive line and another wide receiver, in defense an improvement in the linebackers and safeties is most likely.

AFC West

The Oakland Raiders are working on rebuilding the team and thanks to two trades they have three options in the first round. The greatest need is in pass rush and cornerbacks in defense as well as tight ends and offensive linemen in offense.

The Denver Broncos signed quarterback Joe Flacco for the 2019 season , who was overtaken by rookie Lamar Jackson at the Baltimore Ravens . It is believed that Flacco would only serve as an interim solution for a newly drafted quarterback who would benefit from Flacco's experience. There are gaps in the Broncos' squad with the defensive line and the linebackers. There could also be a third pass recipient behind Emmanuel Sanders and Courtland Sutton .

The Los Angeles Chargers have some catching up to do on the offensive line and defensive tackles. In addition, the cornerback position could be strengthened.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a strong offense, but there is still room for improvement in the offensive line. The departure of the two pass rushers Justin Houston and Dee Ford created a weakness in defense, and the Chiefs also need a cornerback.

AFC North

The Cincinnati Bengals need reinforcements in the offensive line and with the linebackers. There is also speculation about whether the Bengals are looking for a successor to the injury-prone quarterback Andy Dalton in the draft .

The Cleveland Browns , which were the worst franchise in 2017 , have strengthened significantly and are now considered a promising team for the 2019 season. However, the change of offensive guard Kevin Zeitler left a gap, and a second cornerback would strengthen the team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have the greatest weaknesses in defense, where a second cornerback is missing and an inside linebacker is wanted due to the injury of Ryan Shazier . There is also a need for the offensive line.

The Baltimore Ravens have to close some gaps in the Pass Rush and linebackers after several exits. In addition, the franchise lacks pass recipients.

AFC East

The New York Jets lack wide receivers. In defense, the defensive line is the greatest weak point.

The Buffalo Bills need a tight end and reinforcement for the offensive line.

The Miami Dolphins parted ways with their long-time quarterback Ryan Tannehill after the 2018 season , for whom an adequate replacement has not yet been found. Other construction sites are offensive, defensive line and the pass rush.

The New England Patriots are looking for a new tight end after Rob Gronkowski has retired . In addition, wide receivers and a defensive tackle are missing.

AFC South

The Jacksonville Jaguars have found Nick Foles to be their franchise quarterback in the Free Agency. There is still room for improvement in the offensive with the offensive line and the pass recipients. Another reinforcement option is the position of the defensive tackle.

The Tennessee Titans are said to have a need for improvement in defense with cornerbacks and defensive tackles. In the offense, a new tight end could be sought in the draft to inherit Delanie Walker .

The Indianapolis Colts have a well-positioned offense around quarterback Andrew Luck . The defense is looking for reinforcements in the defensive backfield, and a new defensive tackle could be drafted.

The Houston Texans also need improvement in the secondary. The offense requires a new tight end and offensive linemen.

Transfers

In the United States , ABC , ESPN, and the NFL Network broadcast the draft. There was also a stream on nfl.com. In the German-speaking region, the first round was broadcast by ProSieben Maxx and on ran.de.
