NGC 4578 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 100 million light years from the Milky Way . It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1720 .
The object was discovered on January 18, 1784 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel using his 18.7 inch mirror telescope.
