The 1968/69 NHL season was the 52nd season in the National Hockey League . 12 teams played 76 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 4-0 win in the final series against the St. Louis Blues . So far, no player had managed to score over 100 points in one season. Some had just failed, but this year there were three players who overcame this hurdle. While the two old warriors Gordie Howe (103) and Bobby Hull (107) just made it, Phil Esposito's 126 points were a real milestone. Gordie Howe scored his # 700 NHL goal during the season. Although almost a year younger than Howe, former All Star Goalie Jacques Plante quit his skate a few years ago. Meanwhile 40 years old, he let himself be persuaded to return to the big stage. Together with 38-year-old Glenn Hall , he led the St. Louis Blues into the Stanley Cup final and won his seventh Vezina Trophy .
